The original roller button head gun was a low pressure gun that was used to fill rollers with oil. It was low pressure so that you could feel the resistance on the handle when the roller was full so that you didn't blow out the seals in the rollers(now over $100 each seal). The button head was for r...

Yes, the operators manual will include all the adjustment instructions. Looking at mine for a 440 it says to put the straight edge between the sprocket and upper roller. The dimension for a 440 is between 7/8" and 1 1/8". The service manual gives dissasembly and reassembly details and specs. The par...

Dieselnut, As Ludan said you need some slack or as you found out it will bind up the tracks pretty badly. Let some grease out and run it around a bit. Then get a straight board or pipe and lay it on the track between the upper roller and the front idler. Measure fron the bottom of the straight edge ...

Panhead, With the front cylinder TDC on the compression stroke(both valves closed) and timed to the mark as you described the slot for the distributor should be running parallel to the crankshaft with the narrower side of the grove wall should be toward the outside of the crawler. The pictures in my...

Panhead, There are two types of two cylinder distributer caps. One for the horozontal two cylinder tractors and one for the verticle two cylinders in the 420,430 and 440. They are not interchangable. If you have the correct one and the orientation of the terminals is off then either it is not timed ...

Dave, The sereal number being on the counsole is the correct location for the diesels. Your serial number is in the mid 1960 range and what you are calling the shifting lever I believe is actually the throttle which on the 1960 models was in the center of the dash and moves straight forward and back...

Pat,
go to the top of this thread where Lavoy gives the searial numbers by production year. I think that is as close as you can get. average the years production volume per month and you will be close.

Bound up track

Last week I was out on my 440 stripping topsoil and leveling subsoil then replacing the topsoil for a large greenhouse. The subsoil is coarse gravel and I was picking up stones in the track as usual. About 4 hours into the project my left track started squawking louder than the usual trapped rock an...

Just one note on your starting procedure.
I would have the thing in 5th gear(not neutral) with the clutch in so that if it did start and begin to run away you could dump the clutch, stand on the brake and kill it.
The Detroit man's diagnosis may be the best $100 bucks you spend.

I don't imagine you get a whole bunch of help with that kind of attitude. Get your manuals, study them. They have great descriptions and exploded views that show you what you are dealing with and how it comes apart and goes back together. Call Mother deere to see how much the parts are or even how m...

Mine leaked quite badly. When I changed it to put in the big washer thingy that goes under the filter (which I got from Lavoy) I very carefully cleaned out the O-ring grove. Put it together and it has been bone dry ever since. I thought that there might have been two o-rings in there but there was j...

Tim, Sounds like it may be running too lean if you can't open the choke without killing it. Which carb does it have and how did you adjust it? Go down a dosen or so items in the Early model forum to 420 carb and use those starting settings if the carb number is higher than that one. If it is an earl...

dennis, There are only 2 ways the oil can get in there. One way if it is truly transmission oil is through bad seals between the transmission and clutch housing and the other is from bad pinion seals between the final drives and the clutch housing. Some people replace both when repairing clutches. A...
