Thank you for the replies. He was able to find a used steering pump in decent shape - but now has engine failure. He's considering putting a 219 engine in so then I guess he would have to go without steering pump.

He got himself a little money pit - I'm glad I live far away.

Straight 450 Dozer Steering Pump

A friend has a straight 450 with a failed power steering assist pump. It appears there is no way to rebuild the pump and new is $1,700+. (Love John Deere!) My understanding is that it is an "assist" system. Does anyone know if it is possible to just remove and seal off and operate without the pump? ...

Need a used sprocket for a 450c

I'm in the middle of a project.
Rest of the undercarriage doesn't warrant a new sprocket.
Just want to get this one done and then maybe do a complete undercarriage overhaul.
Does anyone know where I might obtain a sprocket.
I'm in central Ohio.
Thanks.

Steering Clutch Question

I was looking at a 450C Loader today. It's a little rough but might serve my purpose. However, I noticed that when you pull the left steering lever and let go, the left track returns to speed immediately. However, when doing the same with the right side, there is a noticeable lag - like 2 or maybe e...

Thanks for the responses. I've been looking at the parts book and I don't believe the final shares oil with anything else. The trans and steering clutches share the same sump but that is it. If anything, it looks like a leak would let oil from the steering clutches migrate to the finals as they are ...

No offense meant but, I understand what is specified. I also know that there are compromises made in specifications - for example the benefit of just going with one lubricant for entire machine (no need for user to stock multiple products) when another might be slightly better in a given location. N...

450C Final Drives / 80w-90 Gear Oil or Hygard Hydraulic?

I just changed out my fluids and filters. The book calls for hydraulic fluid in the finals but what came out was heavier than hydraulic, so I put in 80w-90 gear oil. I talked with an experienced mechanic who said they always used to run the gear oil because the hydraulic just doesn't seem heavy enou...

Thanks for the replies.
We have a stainless sheet metal fabricator for a neighbor.
Had him make me a couple trays out of heavy stainless.
They should outlast me by a long time!

450C Battery Box

Does anyone know where I might find one?
I found a used one but it is too small. I guess it is for a 350.

Agreed on the tech manual error. I'm lucky that our company has a very good mechanic that kind of oversees what I'm doing and gives me tips, etc. as I go. He convinced me it had to be wrong or I would have probably put it back together per the book and had to take it all back out again. LP, not sure...

Schematic is WRONG

Just for what it's worth to anyone who might go through this process, the JD schematic for this Spool Valve is WRONG! http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc459/Farmboy1969/SpoolValveSchematic.jpg Part number 22 (Plunger) is shown backward. There is no way it will go together as shown. Also the 5/16"...

I had a huge amount of blade slop. You can see how the top of the pivot pin was badly worn. Interestingly, the hole in the back of the blade wasn't worn nearly as much. (Must be harder metal) We noticed that the hole was about 2.7" and the pin was about 2.5". 2.5" Schedule 40 steel pipe has an ID of...
