Hey, I changed one of those! It was a trick. I could not find the "John Deere Starter Wrench" that was mentioned but I made one. I took a cheapo wrench and heated it up and bent it to the shape I needed. I could still only turn the bolts a weeny bit at a go but I did get it out and put a new one in....

Thanks for the advice. I'm willing to do it right! I still need to see if I can get parts any cheaper (not to sound too much of a cheap skate). Do you have anyplace I can turn to here for these things?
Lavoy, did you have an option for me?

Okay, parts list came in at $750. Both my mechanic and I thought that a bit high. So, I want to shop for parts and hopefully find a better deal: - head gasket set, oil pan gasket and front and rear seals (or complete gasket set) - one piston w/ rings and liner w/ o rings (or kit for the three) - exh...

Boy Lavoy, you sound confident. Yes, I am looking to get this crawler going again for many reasons. Right now the guy I have going to do the work is getting a price for parts. Rocker arm shaft (hold down?), piston and rings, liner, oil pan and head gasket set. Also, the exhaust valve is going to be ...

65' gas 350 woes

I found out that I lost a valve on my 350. It needs to be dug into a bit deeper to see just how much damage has been done. I was told some part of it has fallen into the cylinder and could have mucked up a bunch of other things. I was also told the fix might not be worth the machine in the long run....

Well, that is an offer I'd be more than willing to try. The unfortunate thing is I'm in the Lakes Region, probably 2 hours from New Boston. I appreciate the offer, but have a call in to the traveling repair guy around here. It's Thanksgiving tomorrow and will have to wait out the holiday to proceed....

So if this spring loaded clutch is indeed broken, why would it cause the engine to stop. I guess what I am asking is what does the spring loaded clutch have to do with the running of the engine? What about the timing gear? Could that have sheared in some way that would cause it all to go caplooey? P...

Thanks for the info eventhough it doesn't sound good. Pulling the engine would be tough to do myself.

You say that it would jam the engine yet it turns over okay. Am I just lucky that it isn't jammed or could it be something else?

my 350 (gas) just stopped... help

I have a 65' JD 350 (gas) crawler. It has been great. I was just splitting wood off it at a slow idle and it sounded like something snapped in the engine. It coughed and pushed some smoke out. It also sounded like some loose change was in there (yikes). I shut it off as quick as possible, probably w...

I can't thank you enough for that picture! Found it! It looked to bethe stop post to the engage lever to the winch in the back. Scraped a bit of paint and there was the seam right before my eyes. Now the fluid is as milky as can be so it needs to get out of there. When I drain, how do I get most of ...

straight 350 tranny

Okay, I took the entire floor plates out and can't find a dipstick. there was a cutout in the floor next to the hour meter but it was a blank spot on the tranny. Could this be a case where I need to take a bolt out and just check level by sight? Again, any more input would be appreciated.

straight JD 350 tranny dipstick!

I hate to sound like a dipstick myself, but I can't find the one in my '65 straight 350. Last winter I had a freeze up that I think is because I have H2O in the tranny. I want to check before I change but can't find the stick. It's a 4 speed w/ reverse, not a reverser. Can anyone help me?

'65 straight 350 trouble

I’m the owner of a JD 350 crawler dozer. I bought it 7 years ago for $6500 and it has done a great many things for me since. The biggest plus for me was having a super winch on the back to skid logs off my land. I have a house now from them and I couldn’t have done it without this machine. So, needl...
