Losing a good friend and neighbor
Yesterday a neighbor was moved to hospice, terminal cancer. Paul is 96, has always farmed, he was working up until last week. He has been a institution in the neighborhood as long as we have been here. When we bought our place he helped US clean things up. When we had horses we bought hay from him. ...

Re: Easiest tough decision I ever made.
This retirement thing gets a little weird at times. First piece of equipment I operated was a roadgrader. Right after high school I worked for the township road department. Guy that ran the grader was a childhood friend of my mother. He sort of took me under his wing. Let run the grader some when th...

Re: Easiest tough decision I ever made.
The wife has a ever expanding list of projects she wants done. I admit since I worked so much things around the farm didn't get done. Promised her a year from now it will look like retired people live here. She has put up with alot over the years, she deserves to have this placed whipped into shape.

That is part of the plan. Also looking for a late 40's Reo Speedwagon dump to restore. That's what my grandfather had.

Easiest tough decision I ever made.
After 26 years operating my sawmill and excavation business decided to close it down at end of year and retire, sort of. Wife wanted me to hang it up 3 years ago at 62, but wasn't ready. Been agonizing over this for months, but now the decision had been made I realize it was really a easy thing to d...

Citiodits yet again
I live in a rural area. Lot of hunting camps and vacation homes. So, Pennsylvania is under a stay at home no unnecessary travel order. A number of campers have decided to come to their camps and hunker down for the duration, but most camps are unoccupied. So, this woman posts on the local Facebook p...

Re: I Must Have Looked Pretty Dumb
No reason to feel foolish. We live in the last house on a dead end road, surrounded by national forest, nearest neighbor a mile away on the other side if the hill. We have never had trouble but I always keep the 45 where i can get to it in a hurry. Never used to worry. But one of my friends is a cou...

Was told by a guy who used to work high iron, similar to tower climbing, you have to be an adrenaline junkie.

What would you like to operate?
Here's a question inspired by the add to the fleet thread. What equipement would you like to operate? Not own, but run it just to say you did it? I had a stint in the 80's as a OTR driver, ran alot of East Coast so that part wasn't much fun, but other days were ok. Anyhow, that got me thinking about...

Reasonable prices used graders are easy to find. Might have be patient for the right machine. I looked about 9 months for mine. A 72 Galion 503A with 10 foot blade. Only needed a wheel cylinders, a cutting edge and one hydraulic hose. Only have $8500 in it. And is precomputer.you would need somethin...

Re: Question for woodworkers
I can't say every rich person is a jerk. Back when I started my business I was working a day job in a fabrication plant. I had a chance to buy a old deuce and a half converted into a log skidder. This was a machine that would really help the business. But, I w as maxed out financially, needed $2000,...

Re: Question for woodworkers
Love the slate floor, especially since it came from your own property. Closest thing to slate we have here is shale. I tried something similar on a patio, but didn't work. Our local shale is very rotten, it mostly fell apart. The house I am using the recycled lumber from reminds me of couple of your...
