Thanks Stan. As the torque is the same as for a 420C, for which I have a service manual, is it a safe assumption that the sequence is also the same?

What is the 440IC Head Bolt Torque Spec?

Can anyone tell me what the head bolt torque specification is for my 1960 JD 440IC (gas)?
Thanks in advance.

Here are the hydraulic pump drive parts laid out left to right (pump to engine). The shaft is 3 inches long with 1 inch from pump end to oversized spline, oversized spline length about 1/2 inch leaving 1 1/2 inches on the engine end. Is it possible that the shaft was instaled wrong end around last t...

Something is odd, the splined shaft should be oversize in the middle so it shoulders against the drive on the crank, and the coupler. It is possible someone has made up a shaft and did not provide for this. Lavoy Damn you're good, Lavoy! That's it! I went out and looked at the shaft again and it lo...

Thanks, Ben! A snap ring would make perfect sense. Is the parts book you refer to for your tractor or for the loader on it?

JD 420C Hydraulic Pump Drive Question

My 1957 420C has the hydraulic pump located below the radiator. It is driven, apparently, by a floating shaft (that looks like a PTO stub shaft) that is driven by a female part bolted to the crank shaft pulley. This "floating" shaft has taken to floating so far South (toward the engine) that it come...

Gearmatic WinchDrum 8A Questions

I picked up a 1960 440IC crawler loader last Summer. It had sat a while and the engine was stuck a little. Got it free but not running yet -needs ignition system service. This crawler has a Gearmatic Co. Ltd WinchDrum Model 8A SN 9382 winch on it that is missing the controls. I am a little nervous a...

1960 440IC - What is this thumb cock for?

The 440IC I picked up the other day has a thumb cock just forward of the engine oil filler/dipstick on the right side of the engine. Cranking the engine with this thumb cock open produces a flow of some black sort of oily watery (not creamy) stuff. Engine oil looks good. Initially, it was coolant co...

Yes pins and bushings can be made, no you can't afford it if done properly. I have been working on it for about 4 years now, just now getting somewhere in the process. I made a press once, got one pin out, loaded the rails in the pickup and took them to a track shop and scrapped the press. Having y...

Thanks for the input folks. It looks to me that track parts are becoming limiting factors keeping these old crawlers functional. Out of three I have, one is servicable, one is parked due to track wear and one has very good tracks (that would bring twice what I paid for the whole tractor). I am inter...

Build My Own Track Shop??

So, from the wild assed idea department, I have decided to take a look at putting together my own track shop speciallizing in tracks for my own crawlers (40C, 420C & 440IC). I think I read somewhere that about a sixty ton press is needed to remove/install pins and bushings. Princesss Auto, for examp...

The main thing it is telling you is someone bubblegummed it together rather than repairing correctly. From factory, a 40 has 6 fibers, and 5 steels. When we convert to 420 clutch, 7 fibers, 6 steels. Lavoy Wow! Two extra steels and an extra fibre to make up the slack - that's a lot of wear. Which d...

JD 40C Steering Clutch Disassembly Surprises

Well I finally got around to taking a serious look at the final drives on my 40C. Ctrawler had got to where it refused to move so I figured it was time to get at and do the restoration. Anyhow, oil is coating pretty well everything in the steering clutch housings. Brake bands oil covered but appear ...
