Question, In the last photo, what are the two long levers, low on the right of the dash, pointing horizontally and to the front?? Look like they have black round knobs on them. I've not seen anything like that before?? What do they do? Gus Hi, Yes, the one with the knob on it is the 4-speed gearshi...

Hi, Yeah, the stickers are a lot more robust than the older method of screenprinting the things on. To get the color to pass thru the silkscreen mesh, it has to be really thin with tiny pigment particles. It's actually considered ink, not paint. The yellow stripes and the lettering on these 420's we...

Hi, They need to be stored online, like on Photobucket or some such place. Looks like you put in a line pointing to the directory on your own computer. They get put on using a line like this: [ IMG]http://i902.photobucket.com/albums/ac227/wa2kqy/420c/JD420c2.jpg[/IMG ] Which gets you this: http://i9...

Hi, So. That's what a 420 looks like with paint on it. It's been so long since mine had any, I'd forgotten what it was supposed to look like! I like that shot with the 420 in the middle of the big toys. I was once offered a free D8 - one of the old cable blade jobs. I balked on (a) the cost of hauli...

Oh I don't know, first thing I do with anything I restore for myself is put it in the dirt, that's what they are for. Nothing more fun that playing with a "new" 50 year old crawler after you spent months (years) rebuilding it. Lavoy Do you bother to paint the moldboard and the track pads the way th...

Hi, Oh, yes! I just wrote a PhD dissertation on Ancient Electrical Systems Part-II over in the thread '420c Amp Meter': http://www.jdcrawlers.com/messageboard/viewtopic.php?t=4679 I ended with a joke about the next in the series, the Part-I, Three Brush system as used on the MC. Then, I came to this...

Hi, Well, if the generator has no output, then the ammeter will read 0 with the lights off and around -10 with the lights on. It should read around +10 with the lights off right after starting, and drop off to near 0 as the generator catches things back up. With the lights on, it should read around ...

Hi, I always thought one washed a crawler by getting it stuck in a mud hole! Lots of years of use and storage in a pole barn. It keeps the rain off, but the sun still fades the paint. She hasn't had paint on the track frames since, well, I can't remember when. They used to be yellow. Actually, about...

Hi, Yep. Pretty fancy. A yellow wire-nut, right? Nothing is fancier than a color coordinated wire nut! Actually, I was rather mad at the whole mess. Part of soldering and heat shrink is me being an anal electrical engineer, of course, but part is not. Some of it was me being realistic in think...

Stan's JD 420c
Hi, OK. I *finally* did it. I managed to get (a) the crawler and (b) the camera outside on the same day and at the same time, even. A first! So, here's some pix of the old girl. 1958 JD 420c Phase III. Originally sold by my uncle at his JD dealership in Copake NY to a local dairy farmer. It was used...

Hi, Hey! I just did that yesterday! Well, I had the camera figured out long ago. Lots of cameras, actually, since 1973. Darkrooms as well, both B&W and color. Been digital since 1999. No, it wasn't the camera and it wasn't the crawler. It was having both out at the same time! So, I did just th...
