Welcome to a different world of skinned knuckles. :D Go to JD's site for a .pdf of the parts manual. For model type in "420" then scroll down to "505 - 420 and 430 Tractors", and download it. I'm guessing I'll be breaking off alot of bolts when I start to pull the undercarriage apart. I will heat them up with torches, but some of them are pretty rough. The track tensioner bolts are well seized so I'll try working them first. In my mind i already figured they would have to be cut off and...

Hi: I've been researching getting my 420 re-pinned and bushed. I can not find any after market parts which makes this an expensive project. My rails, sprockets and front rolls (idlers) look similar to yours, and my center to center pin distance is 23 1/2" and I have about as much adjustment as you s...

If you want it, I can send you a .pdf carb manual with schematics and ideas. Send an email to: pbuhler@vermontel.net. At least tearing down and rebuilding a carb is pretty easy. Depending on which carb you have, some of the galleries have right hand bends in them that a wire won't clean in one step....

We can almost hear it running. When you get it to that point, how about a YouTube or equivalent film clip? Thanks again for sharing your project - I know mine didn't get the total love and attention your's is getting, and it occasionally reminds me.

You may want to have a light load in your front bucket when digging out your stump with your back hoe. It helps to stabilize your machine and makes your ride a bit smoother as you tear at the roots. Take small bites and be patient - fixing an over worked machine takes longer and costs more in the en...

Thanks for sharing. It's fun to see how another person goes about bringing a machine back to life. I'm sure that your wife is happy that you're getting the parts cleaned up and off the lawn. Good luck as you finish up, and enjoy your accomplishment. Paul

Hi: When I was logging, we used to say "load light; bind tight." The meaning is if you work your machine too hard and go too fast and loose, you'll regret it. Most machines have a threshhold for work higher than we might think, but exploring the upper limits on a regular basis costs downtime and mon...
