Oil out the front grill

Probably not engine oil. There is a hydraulic spin-off filter behind the grill and in front of the radiator. That's the transmission case oil filter, shown on page 55-4 in manual TM-1102. You might just have a bad hose. You should also check the transmission oil fill level (under the seat). Steve

Undercarriage parts source in NorCal

I got my undercarriage parts at the Berco dealer in Woodland -- Industrial Tractor Parts on Pioneer Ave. Got two sprockets and all-new assembled tracks. Excellent prices, and interestingly they were recommended by the guy at the Pape Machinery parts counter in Sacramento. If you are interested I can...

450C right side track problem solved

Been a while since I posted. A couple of weeks ago I had a periodic problem with the right track not engaging. Got my dozer 4 years ago, and it did not have the plate below the seat where the hour meter is mounted. I mounted a new meter in the faceplate where the cigarette lighter plug was. Turned o...

Re: 350 vs 450
Thanks for the comment.

What kind of jobs made you reach the limits of the 350B? Thanks!
Pushing over large oak trees, cutting roads on our 120 acre ranch with fairly steep terrain, filling in steep gullies to restore damage from mining in the 1850's.

350 vs 450

No reaction to the comments from others, but if you really need to push dirt a 450 will get more work done. I fixed up a 350B only to find that it did not have enough power for my needs. The 450 series are more appropriate to my needs, and not much more costly to buy in my area. Of course you need t...

Berco chains and pads

I am very happy with the new Berco chains and pads I put on my 450C two years ago. Also installed new sprockets at the same time.

Consider used parts

I also got sticker shock when my JD dealer quoted $1100. My linkage was so sloppy that the previous owner of my 450C had used a cutting torch to open up the opening to allow the T-bar to have more travel. I ended up getting used linkage for $500 and it was a great improvement. Since I only use my do...

Squeaky tracks

My 450C tracks squeak in the summer when the ground dries out and turns to powder. They get quiet after the rains return. Earplugs help, but there is really no use in pushing dust around! Summer for me is maintenance season -- just changed out my transmission and clutch fluids and rebuilt lift cylin...

450Cdrain plug problem solved

Tried one more time with Allen wrench, cut the short end even shorter, gently but firmly tapped in with hammer, put on a short cheater and got 'er out! Cutting the wrench shorter reduced the lever action and allowed me to pull better. I put more time into tapping the wrench in as fsr as I could to a...

450C clutch drain plug problem

Drained my transmission and left clutch today, but could not remove right clutch drain. Drain plugs require a 3/8 allen wrench, but the head was a bit smashed. I hammered the allen wrench into the plug but could only get it in half way. Predictably, trying to turn it stripped the top of the plug hol...

Chain vs chocker

Great pics!

I know plenty of people drag with chains, but I'd suggest a cable choker. I have a stretched and "self-welded" chain that is now worthless. A simple drag should be ok with a chain, but any major resistance could damage the chain. Never had a problem with a choker.

And it was the cheap one too.  Gus Great news, Gus! Whether it is cheap or expensive solutions, eye protection is...

Forgot to mention that cyberweld has Hobart auto darkening helmets as cheap as $67. Depends on what features you want, but good range of prices.

Welding helmet

Best choices and price I've found are at cyber weld: http://store.cyberweld.com/autdarwelhel.html I got a Hobart Black XVX 770627 for $225. It has twice the viewing area as my old helmet, and everything -- including response time --is completely adjustable. They also have a similar Miller for about ...

Could be wrong, but if the 450C loader grill is the same as on my 450C dozer, you take out the bolt in the top center of the grill and it tilts forward for removal. My 350B had a small wheel welded to a bolt, but my 450 simply has a bolt that takes a 3/4 inch wrench.
