I'm still lookin' for any info on front cross shaft removal from the track frame. Mine had all 4 bolts 'loose', i.e. they were backed out the same thickness as the lock washers, which were among the missing. Removed 3 and twisted off one. Soakin', jackin', wedgin' and using the resource of last reso...

Thank goodness for the Ford backup tractor. I've had to rely on mine in the past. Looks like you had quite a time but now both you and the JD are well again. Thanks for the pictures and verbalization of your trials.

Bill, Looks good from here. I'm really interested in how you get the front cross bars freed up from the frames. I'm still workin' on the first one and it is tight. The water blast worked fine for the rear for me too. You will have a fine lookin' machine when you get done..and if you see the 'crawler...

Lavoy, Thanks for the #286 Service Bulletin on use of gauge JD-7. I'll mark mine as indicated, because at my present rate of work I'll probably have lost what memory I have left when I get to reinstalling the steering clutches.

Bill, Looks like you are going alone pretty good. I'm tryin' to work on my 440 outside. Winter finally got here. I would be very interested to know how you get the front cross shaft out of the front bracket on the track frame...if you are going that far. I need to since I managed to break some rolle...

Thanks for the very helpful information found in these messages. Finally (after probably 20 hrs active and 6 weeks passive soaking, not in that order!) have been able to free rear crossbar on 440, by washing and gouging out dirt with wires, hacksaw blades and compressor fed washing wand. The hole be...

It is interesting to see a use now in 2006, on a commercial basis, for one of the early JD crawlers. What makes it more attractive than a newer machine ?

Glad to be corrected on silver / gold. I suppose that since gold is reputed used on circuit boards etc., I assumed it was better....in one way, since you ahve mentioned it, I'd have to say it is ...corrosion is more important in electronics and the things that they fly/guide than on a crawler. I'll ...
