After over a year, and with a lot of help from Lavoy, I was able to get my 1957 JD 420 crawler going. If it is grinding, the clutch disc must be dragging, there should be no rotation of the input shaft as you are trying to shift. Bob , The nut compresses a rubber seal that seals the return line to the tank . If it is leaking from above than the seal in the end plate of the valve assembly is probably leaking .
