440 Steering Levers
In the last stage of final drive rebuild and new steering clutch installation. Adjusting the steering levers and noticed quite a bit of free movement (~1") in the levers before the bearing cams start to move (both sides). Likely worn ball joints in the bearing cam rod. Adjusting the length of the ro...

Yes, you need to remove the track and I would recommend removing all the hydraulics and fenders. Get everything you can out of the way, because as Howard said, the finals are heavy. Make the lift ring as suggested in the service manual and get something to support the final (gantry or engine hoist),...

Paint thinner and laquer thinner are not the same. Laquer thinner is typically a mixture of polar solvents (ketones, alcohols, etc) while paint thinner is typically a mixture of non-polar solvents (petrolium "oil" based fractionates, toluene). Polar and non-polar solvents are typically immisible (the...

440 Brake Band Installation
Installed both final drives and adjusting the throwout bearing and new brake bands. During this I noticed that on one drive, the brake band appears to not be on the drum parallel to the brake drum. I believe the brake band may be hung up a little either on the drum or more likely, pushed in a little...

Lavoy: Thanks for the information. I took the shaft to the machinist this morning to see what he will charge to spray weld. If it is too much, I will use the adhesive. It should work fine. Everything is within about 0.002" so this will not require gap filling adhesive. I will use the low viscosity v...

Thanks for all the replies. I think the inner bearing is pretty tight on the shaft since I had to drive that one on. I believe all the problem is with the outer bearing which is loose and has been spinning against the pinion gear. Any chance a cyanoacrylate ("CA"=industrial super glue) will hold the...

Here is what I think is going on. If I drive the inner bearing on all the way, then slide on the drive gear and outer bearing, there is a small gap between the outer bearing and the snap ring. The outer bearing is not tight on the shaft, as such the shaft can move slightly, the amount it moves is eq...

440 Final Drive Shims
Reinstalling final drive shaft in 440 final drive. Installed new seal, bearing cups and bearings. Everything seams to fit and the snap ring is installed. The service manual indicates to add shims and tighten up the quill and measure end play and then remove enough shims to pre-load 0.000 to 0.003". ...

Finally got the bolts in. Used a jack in the front under the grill and one in the back, under the transmission. This allowed for up/down adjustments. Then used LARGE C-clamps between the cross bar brackets and center section to adjust left and right. A little turn here and there and everything align...

Well, I have finally re-installed the first final drive back on the crawler. As discussed in this old posting, I moved he left final over to the right side. Installation was fairly simply. However, my favorate bolts between the cross bar brackets and the final drive do not line up. Since both finals...

440 Axle Specification
Rebuilding one of my final drives and the axle is worn at the seal area. Having a local machine shop spray weld the area back up and resurface. What is the specification for the axle diameter? My concern is not at the seal area, but where the bearing sits. I do not what the bearing too loose or tigh...

Lavoy: Thanks. Was able last night to get everything out. Tube was slightly out of round at the end so the cam was tight at the very end, but it came off. Was able to remove the rod after using penetrating oil to loosen up some rust. Everything looks usable with a little cleaning. Having taken one s...

OK, removed the throw out bearing carrier. Now trying to get the cam out. To get the cam out I need to remove the cam rod which is connected by two ball joints. Have removed the nut that holds the top ball joint bolt to the rocker arm on the brake lever, but not enough room to clear the bolt from th...
