Re: Track chain specs?

OK, my rail height looks pretty good but the pitch is beyond 100% worn. If memory serves you had a source for pins and bushings? Should I contact you directly to figure out how to get the chains from Vt. to No Dakota?

Track chain specs?

Good morning, Been a while since I've done much with my 420C but I've been watching Squatch with his D2's and D4's on You Tube and it's got me thinking about my old timer. I did look through the FAQ's and didn't see a post about the spec's for the track chain to determine if mine is rebuildable or n...

Free play on 420c axle

Hey guys, I'm rebuilding the final drive on my 420c and just finished installing the axle. According to the service manual I should be able to add shims to achieve a bearing preload of .004 to .007. Instead, with all the shims in and the cover torqued down I still have .023" of free play I pressed t...

420 starting issues

You have gotten a lot of knowledgeable replies but I'll just add my 2 cents. For both of my gas engines that sit for a long time I find it works great to tow start them when they first come out of the shed. Start in a high gear, to turn the motor over slowly, then work your way down through the gear...

Shop press

My press arrived today! For some reason the outfit I bought it from was offering free shipping on the 30 ton model and not on the twenty. That made the price difference small enough that I went with the 30. I know what you mean about the bearing cage. Especially when you're in a hurry to make a repa...

Shop press

Thanks for the info, guys. I'm going to go ahead and get a nice 20 ton model and firmly forget about trying to do the tracks myself.

Thanks again

Shop Press

I'm thinking of buying a shop press and I don't know what size I should be looking for. I do pretty much all the repair work on my farm and I have gotten by without a press long enough. At some point I will need to pin and bush my 420C, will a fifty ton press handle that? If it won't is there any re...

I just finished going through the feed roll assembly on my JD 3970 forage harvester with the "I'm going to tear it all the way down and replace everything that needs it." attitude. Two new rolls, all new bearings, bushings, wear plates, scrapers. Quite a parts bill but it should be back to chopping ...

420C steering clutch

I decided to have a go at the steering clutches on my 420C. Over the course of a dump cleaning/land reclamation project last spring they both developed problems. So I've taken the right hand final drive off and have taken the steering clutch apart. The problem on this side was that the clutch would ...

Maybe I'm confused but I just priced out pins and bushings online through Deere and found that pins are $14.75 and bushings are $13.99. No price available on the master pin. So for one side of my four roller 420C I would be looking at $433.69 for the bushings, $442.50 for the pins. If a guy could do...

Heat does wonders! If you think of it before you twist off the bolts you're way ahead of the game. Someone recently showed me that if you draw a bead of weld around the inside of a bearing race they will all but fall out when they cool. It's just like magic.

The track adjusters appear to be near the end. With years worth of rust in the tracks will you soon have used up what take up you have when you start to use it?

Man, I wish I had known about this site before I bought my 420C!

Does an arch like that bolt to the crawler or to the winch? Is it possible to put one on a 420 with a Gearmatic 8A?

Now I at least know the apx. age of my "new" combine. My dad bought my "old" one new so I know that's a 52. A Dearborn-Wood Bros. pull type with a Ford flathead 4 cyl. engine. I've been told it's an 8N motor carrying on as a power plant. The funny thing about that motor is that is was always a mean ...

My 45's have M 51HA type engines, both gas. I've seen 45's refered to as square back or round back, I assume that just refers to the shape of the tin work in the rear. Mine are both square backs, guessing that makes them later models. I'm sure that is no help with your question either, but maybe I'l...
