That was my problem and it was the brakes. Problem was the oil seal was bad. Oil got on the brake drum, which caused the brakes not to work. See no oil just adjusting the brake nut.

Hi, clutch goes in hard at times, grinding sound

Thank you for all the help. You guys have me up and running, starting good, timing is great but now it has and always had trouble getting into gear. Sometimes in goes into gear easy with no problems then switches over and I have to grind it into gear.? I looked in the book I don't see in there where...

RIGHT ON! The battery on a load test failed. So I switched the battery out and it's running. I was thinking with the volts on the battery up the battery was good, but not the case. I was glad I took the starter out and found the brushed was down to the nub. So thank you guys for all the help and I o...

That was a misprint on "cable" I meant "jumper cable" but the battery was still hooked up to the JD. I going to test and clean the cables on both the + & -. I cleaned all the cable connections that I could see. I don't have a alternator/generator on it. It was a alternator but the bearing went out a...

OK, I put the brushes in and it worked great. The starter turns over and engages the flywheel without binding, when it is hooked up to a car and jumper cables. BUT when i try to start it without the jumper cables does not turn over. I let the battery charge for ten minutes. Battery shows 12.81 volts...

This is what I did today, took it all a part and brushes are down to ntohign and rubbing into the screw the holds it. This just had no sign of it doing that or I didn't notice. It had metal shaving from the brushing in the housing. Cleaned everything, ordered the $3 brushing. Now I'm worried ...

Thank you for the replies, I don't know if it was a 6 volt starter but it is hook up to a 12 volt system now. It looks like the original starter. If that happened that it was a 6 volt and you hook up a 12 volt battery to it, Is that bad? Now the whining sound, sounds more like current than moving pa...

Hi need help on a starter Q for a 40c

Thank you guys for all the help on the timing problem, which got me up and running. I have an early 40c crawler and now I tried to start it and it makes a whining sound. Like lots of current is going through. I had it connected to the charger and when I pulled the knob for the starter the voltage me...

this is the way mine ended up on TDC compression stroke and I put it back together and it runs great. I don't know how because the spark is even farther away from #1 cylinder. Even in -10f all day long.

Hi here's what i did today. lol I took out the oil pump. Lavoy pointed out I did have it out 90 degree. Thank you Lavoy. So now it's like this. - When I don't know how to paste my pictures but it's narrow side parallel on TDC compression stroke. The rotor point parallel toward the generator. which d...

Thank you for the replies. It would back fire when the wires were correct and not run. When i crossed the wires it would run. I believe you are right that's it's 90 off and running on one cylinder. I took # 1 spark plug out and put a rubber plug in and when it blew out I now know it's on the compres...

OK I got it to run, but on the picture there I have the spark plug wires crossed. When I had it the other way (right way) it would back fire really loud. Scared me good. Blew off the cap to the exhaust and flew right by my head. I was lucky. With the wires crossed it runs OK. What did I do wrong???
