Re: Clueless newbie help me.

Will, I cannot help you with the rest of your issues, but the power steering pump is easy to rebuild. I recently had mine apart as part of a complete engine rebuild and it is very straightforward. I did not have to replace any parts or gaskets since mine was in good shape so I cannot attest to parts...

Another 450 HLR clutch adjustment question

I have finally got a project straight 450 crawler loader running. But I cannot get the engine clutch adjusted according to instructions in the manual. I have both the operators manual and the service manual. The procedure for clutch adjustment is the same in both. My main problem appears to be that ...

I just operated a new-to-me straight 450 crawler loader for the first time this morning. Although it is equipped with power assist steering, I have not hooked mine up yet. It operated just fine and I did not think the force on the steering levers was excessive. As for the pump, I would not rule out ...

Hi Jim,
Regarding lining up your frame rails to bell housing. I have just been through this and have some ideas but they will be hard to describe in a post. Feel welcome to give me a call and I will explain better over the phone.

PM sent with phone number.

Here are photos of the clutch finger setting gauge that I used to adjust the clutch in my H-L-R 450 loader. I used two small C-clamps to hold a straightedge across two small bench squares standing upright. It was quite simple to set up and adjust the straightedge to be horizontal. I used the depth a...

b_ware, Are you looking for the clutch finger setting gauge? My 450 service manual shows using one of two: JD-264 for constant mesh transmissions and JD-227 for the H-L-R transmissions. The 227 gauge is to be modified by cutting .156" step on the center gauge surface and measuring to there. Fingers ...

straight 450 front cross bar repair / welding advice

I am fixing up a 450 loader that has a number of frame and crossbar problems (see nearby post). I have fixed the frame problems (broken bolts into bell housing and cracked frame channel) and now it is on to the front crossbar attachments to the track frame. My basic question is whether it is definit...

jtrichard,
Thank you for the links. I am now rethinking whether to drill and tap bell housing for 7/8". Fortunately the engine is out so I have decent access to everything.

Regards,
Jim

Hi Stan, I just spent the last half hour trying to edit one of my earlier posts. Kept getting the debug. Logged out and in and closed the browser. No joy. Reread my post several times looking for an apostrophe. On the fifth review, I found one. Eliminated it and it posted fine. There may be other ca...

jt, Thank you for the good suggestion. I have considered increasing the thread size in the bell housing but currently do not plan to. 1. Drilling and tapping it out to the next size (7/8") by hand will be iffy, in my experience. The threaded length is 2" + and if the hole and tap are not in near-pre...

I had major debug problems while posting yesterday. I read somewhere that there can be no apostrophes (contractions) in the post. Removed mine and it posted just fine. Not sure that was the problem, but it worked for me.

I also found the two large special grade 8 bolts which attach the frame channel to the left side of the bell housing were broken. Since the counter bore in the bell housing and the frame channel bracket were wallowed out, Im having to make new bolts oversize and reaming both bores to fit. These are ...

Hi,
I had the same disconnect problem. Discovered it when I had the engine out. Could not free the fork shaft with out fear of bending. Applied lots of heat to casting with oxy-acet torch and got it to move. Worked it a bit and got full movement. Drilled and tapped for grease zerk.

DBaker,
Did your frame rails break, like mine shown above, or were the cap screws that attach the frame/flange to the transmission just broken?

If the frame broke, how did you accomplish alignment when welding back up?
Thanks,
Jim

Straight 450 frame repair. Any experience/ideas?

I am trying to resurrect a 450 loader. Got the engine running and was about to install it but discovered the left side main frame channel is broken where the frame flange bolts to the transmission case. Background: a previous owner rode this machine hard and there are lots of ham-fisted repairs. For...
