OVERHAULING A 440 ICD

I have worked on a few hundred Detroit engines. I have never worked on a 2-53 but I have a 3-53. I would check the condition of the rings through the hand-hole covers in the side of the block. Next I would suspect the blower seals. If they are out it will blow oil right into the cylinders and out th...

Yes it should if there is still pressure from the pressure plate. If the springs are all rusted and shot, maybe not. Also make sure you have freeplay in the clutch. Lavoy Thanks Lavoy, With the pressure plate on the bench it's easy to tell that two of the fingers are easier to push that the other o...

440 crawler steering clutch

Hi All I bought the crawler that I brought up here before. The final drive is fine. The steering clutch is rusty inside. The very inside fiber disk is stripped. The other disks are not. My question is...Am I missing something? It seems to me that the track should still drive with only one disk strip...

Buying a 440IC

I got the crawler I bought today. It has a gearmatic 8A winch on it. The control is missing. It sounds like the control is no longer available. If I remember correctly the control had a handle that attached to a double master cyl. Push the handle to release the brake and pull the handle to engage th...

If it turns out that the gears are your problem, before you buy parts be sure that they are the correct ones for your serial number. Earlier JD440IC's had a different bull and pinion gear setup. Diesel and early gas crawlers used a bull gear with 55 teeth and pinion with 14 teeth. Later gas only cr...

This state is turning into another communist California, that is a problem for anyone trying to run an honest business. The state will jump your ass for farting in the wrong direction. Can't even collect waste oil for clean disposal in a furnace for heat without fear of a government agent jumping o...

440ICD with #95 Hoe

A lot of those old jimmy diesels would do the "governor hunting" we always called it. It's nothing to worry about. The rack could be a little out of adjustment.

Make the assumption it is the gears, there is a big price difference, and you better buy it on a worst case scenario. Lavoy Thanks Lavoy. I made the deal to buy it about an hour ago. I worked on many 350, 450 and 550 machines but never a 440 so I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something. I wo...

Buying a 440IC

I am looking at buying a 440IC. The machine is gas powered and runs good. The left track won't drive. It jumps a little like it's trying to go. The guy that owns it now had it checked out. He was told that the bull gear and pinon was out in the final. However, it makes no great noise when you try to...
