It would be great if you posted a photo of your contraption.
We call that kind of thinking "yankee ingenuity" up here.

Try this
You might check to make sure that you have enough hydraulic fluid.

Ignition Condenser
As an old-timer mechanic, I can answer that one. The condenser does more than preserve the points, it actually plays a critical part in creating the high voltage spark from the coil. When the points close, a DC current flows through the coil primary, building up a magnetic field. When the points sep...

555 Shop Manuals
I don't know if they're any less expensive, but I found JD Dozer manuals on SSBTRACTOR

Bolt grade vs cost
It'd be interesting to see what markings were on one. I wouldn't necessarily go by cost, though. Mother Deere wants $220.00 for the oil cup on the air cleaner of my 450B that I can get for $27.50 elsewhere :) If my math is good, then 113,784 psi turns into 784 N/mm2. That would be a grade 5 US or 8....

Bolt Rating
According to the Bolt Reference chart in the link I posted above, a Euro grade 8.8 bolt is equal to a US grade 5. That's rated at 91,000 psi and a tensile of 113,784 psi I tried to look up the A17 grade, but it doesn't seem to exist anymore. The A17D grade listed on the jdparts specs doesn't even sh...

Oh, two leaks
Steve, my error, the pump is on the right, just under the alternator. I was confused by the photo in the manual, which shows it being removed. I thought it was supposed to be visible, next to the oil filler neck, but you can't really see it unless you look real good. My wacky hose problem seems like...

Variations?
I went to the local NAPA store and they sold me multipurpose hydraulic hose. It matched what was on the supply side, which seems to be just fine. My steering lines mostly match the parts manual drawings, except for the return line. It probably has to do with having the power steering pump on the lef...

Thanks
Thanks Steve. I already decided not to touch the fitting and I'm making a special hose with a 45 degree bend in it. I'm using a 1/2" copper elbow and a couple of clamps. http://www.snug-harbor-maine.com/images/ddhose01.jpg The power steering return line definitely goes to this fitting. http://www.sn...

450B Transmission cooler hose
Hi, new member here :) I picked up a 450B recently that ran well, but still needs a fair amount of work. For example, the only gauges that work are the tach and ammeter. I was using it to clear my driveway from snow when it stopped going forward. Seeing a trail of fluid behind me, I quickly discover...
