440 tracks

Your lucky day, I have a set of 350 tracks [chains and loader pads]. They are in very good shape. And 10 bottom rollers, 5 JD's and 5 berco in good shape. I took these track off of a 420 loader intending to put them on a 440 dozer that I had, sold my dozer and tried to talk the buyer into taking the...

brake, clutch rod

When you go back together with it install a grease fitting or oil hole so it never happens again.

I rebuilt the frame rails on my 420, cut out the flat metal and welded in 4140. Also I had to rebuild the sliders as they were worn badly. When I welded them they got very hard. Carbide wouldn't cut it so I burnt a big brush pile that I had and threw the pieces in the fire. Dug them out when everyth...

Try annealing them, I've had good luck doing that. Red hot and cool them very, very slow then you should be able to drill them out.

Yes tab to tab at least on any eng. I've ever rebuilt. the tabs keep the bearings from spinning on both the mains and rods. tab to tab keeps the bearings in place no matter the rotation. Pay close attention to the oil ports in the bearings that they match up with the oil passages in the block for th...

Is there not a tab relief in the block ? Or an oil passage that will determine direction?

I ran the dozer yesterday as I had about 90 tons of white rock to spread, My son said we should soak the clutch down with brake cleaner. I did and the clutch worked great, full blade of white rock, no problems spreading the rock. At this time it seems that I got lucky.

Took about an hour but the clutch finally broke loose. I ran it for about an hour yesterday and it started to act up again. I'm guessing that some damage was done somewhere [Lose of free travel on the clutch pedal]. Just another project to put on the list. Oh well, spring is here in central IN, 53 d...

I can look in the vent holes in the bell housing and see the pressure plate release. The clutch plate is stuck to the flywheel. The clutch plate and pressure plate mount into a recess in the flywheel so there is no access to try to pry or bump the clutch plate to free it. At this point I am waiting ...

engine clutch frozen

After about 15 years of not jacking the clutch open for winter storage it finally bit me. I had my 440 dozer out about 6 weeks ago and the clutch worked fine. Yesterday I get it out and it is stuck tight. I've banged it back and forth with the direction reverser. I know that doing that can be very h...

Don't you think you should mic the seal area and see how much under sized it was ground? There is not much to talk about till you know what it measures, then you can have this discussion. Who ever ground the crank should be able to tell what it was ground to and tell you what seal you need. If they ...

420 loader parts

I met a gentleman at an auction the other day who bought a 420 loader to scrap out. It appeared to be a complete loader with a bad tranny. I bought the tracks and rollers from him [very good shape]. The tranny was full of bad gears but other parts appeared good. Gas motor, reverser, loader, sheetmet...

stuck bolts

When you heat up the bolts get them red hot and hold them there for a bit so the heat can soak up into the threaded area of the bolt, then allow it to cool dowm stone cold. The bolt will shrink and allow for hopefully easier removal. If you do as Lavoy suggested then you work it while it is hot. Wha...

Have you thought about just opening the bottem roller mounting holes to 9/16 fine thread ? No worry about loosing the location of the taped holes, no welding, grinding or other dirty work. I did this on my 440 IC and it worked out well for me. Don't forget the new clearance in the roller mounting ho...
