Head Gasket

I need to replace the head gasket on my 1966 450 and was wondering which one to use, the fiber composite type one sold by John Deere (R98461)or the Maxi Force steel type (TR98461) ?

Transmission cooler line 450

A previous owner of my straight 450 changed out the transmission cooler lines from steel to rubber, the rubber is cracking and I want to replace it, but noticed that the top elbow coming out of the casing goes to the bottom of the spin on filter in the grill, and my manual shows it going from the bo...

I tried them last year and all they had was one that was in pretty poor shape. I've dealt with them numerous times in the past and they are great guys, very knowledgeable and helpful. I'd like to get a decent setup tough because I have quite a bit invested in the machine, it is very frustrating as y...

450 running hot

Turns out it was the radiator cap, that was causing the problem

450 running hot

I have a straight 450 and the temp runs in the red a lot, the motor was rebuilt 2 years ago, so I don't no if this is a result of the break in period, (I've only put about 25 hours on it). I put a lower temp setting t -stat to see if that helps, and a new cap, but it still runs hot. Also when I fill...

450

I don't do excavation for a living, but not having the six way blade is frustrating, I'm a carpenter by trade and like to do my own dirt work, and would like to get more into excavation as time goes by. I enjoy the straight 450, but I worry that the infrequent amount of use I give it, that the steer...

Thinking of selling 450

I'm thinking of selling my 66 450, so I can buy a more modern version, specifically something with a hydraulic 6 way blade, if looked into retrofitting my blade but have been unable to locate a decent 6 way blade. I'm into this machine for about 25k, the engine was rebuilt last year, and it was repa...

6 way hydraulic blade

Does anyone know of anyone parting out a 450 in the New England area with a decent 6 way blade? I found one at a local dealer but it's in pretty rough shape.

Thermostat in 450

I had the engine rebuild in my 450 (diesel) last year, it has about 3 hours on it now. When I use it for a short time the temp gauge goes to red and pretty much stays there, even if I let it idle for a while, it has a 180 thermostat which I replaced with another 180 degree thermostat, it appeared as...

Temp Gauge

I recently had the engine rebuilt in my 450, and now when I operate the machine the temp needle seems to stay in the red for quite a while before the thermostat opens and brings it back to normal operating temp. Is this normal or should I replace the thermostat? I'm nervous that in the summer months...

Adding power steering

Does anyone know if it is possible to add power steering to a 450 aftermarket, or is that an option that would have had to come from the factory ?
Thanks
