450 injection pump
I have a JD450 ser# 251. The injection pump has developed a significant leak so I have decided to rebuild it. I have ordered the SM-2045 service manual that corresponds to the JDB431 pump on the machine. I am a pretty fair mechanic but have never done an injection pump and would appreciate any input...

Crawler123 I am using the same instructions by RedDirt. His was a 350 that has smaller brakes. Did you have to cut your drums down and if so by how much? I need 5/16" thick linings to make up for cutting the drums down to get rid of the ridges on the drum surface. My problem is that I can't find the...

I have successfully used the chromed piston rods from old hydraulic cylinders as pins. If you go to any hydraulic cylinder repair shop you can get old rods from their scrap bin for the price of scrap steel as that is what the shop is going to get any way. Most shops do this for good will. Who are yo...

My 450 has a backhoe mounted on it and those holes and a steel pin in that groove between the bolts is for the front of the backhoe mounting brackets. My brackets are separate, as in a right and left bracket, and are not attached to each other. Each bracket in addition to those 2 front holes has 9 m...

Can't say I've ever used rubber pads but I can tell you that sliding sideways down a steep gravel mountain road in the snow/ice with worn metal pads was a real thrill. (Not one I wish to repeat) I was turning around when the slide began. I had to drop my Drott bucket to stop the slide and get the ma...

450 brake relining
I am going to reline my own brake bands. I had to cut the drums 1/16 to flatten them so I am planing to use 5/16" x 2 1/2" brake lining. Does anyone have a source for a semi metallic material of that size? McMasters and everyone else I could find only has that size in non metallic. Is non metallic a...

Parts
Lavoy
I am finally ready for parts. I need 14 steels, 16 fiber disks, and 2 throwout bearings. My pressure plates are OK and meet specs so I will reuse them.

You could jack up the bucket so that you can drive the loader between two stout trees. Put a chain from one tee to the other. You can then suspend a chain fall from the chain to lift the bucket up to its full height. Then I use 2 pieces of 4 inch angle iron 24 inches long and set them on the bucket ...

Clutch parts
Lavoy: I have a 450 crawler loader. Serial # 5E3M012289. I am going to do the clutches and brakes this winter. The parts I know I am going to need are the 14 steels, the 16 friction disks, and the 2 throw out bearings. The 2 pressure plates will be a decision made after I get it torn down. I will re...

Well here is an update. My crawler is back in business. I would love to tell you all what was wrong but the hydraulic shop doesn't know. After the second tear down of the valve they couldn't find a problem so they put it back together and it started working properly. A mystery unsolved but at least ...

I took it to the local hydraulics dealer because he told me that what I said it was doing was not possible. He put it on his tester and sure enough it pressurizes the dump port on the valve whether the spool goes in or out. They replaced all the soft goods and did a test to check for cracks and foun...
