Re: 420C and a flail mower?

Lavoy, I bolted the pto on (for the first time) and noticed that with the tractor running and in neutral with the pto lever disengaged the shaft is still turning, though kind of slowly. When I push the clutch in it then comes to a complete stop. Is it normal for it to turn when in neutral and in the...

Re: 420C and a flail mower?

For sure, both flails and brush hogs have their pros and cons, but, for what I need and want, the flail seems a better choice. Flails do better on uneven ground, which I have, and they don't throw material like a brush hog. And from all the research I have done on different forums, people love their...

Re: 420C and a flail mower?

Hi Lavoy, It's an overrunning clutch, (I mistakenly called it overriding). Here is the exact description from their website. I assume this is what you meant and what I need. "Cast iron 540 RPM with internal over-running clutch - when the PTO shaft is disengaged the built in over running clutch allow...

420C and a flail mower?

Hi all, I have a late model 420C with a 3pt. hitch and pto. Though I have hung some implements from the 3pt., I have never used the pto. I am thinking of getting a 60" Woodmaxx flail mower that requires a minimum 20hp at the pto. I know the Nebraska tests rated the "belt" hp on a 420 at 28+, which I...

420 brake band thickness

Hi all, I have a late model 420 and was wondering what thickness the brake band material should be, (not including the metal band) and whether anyone has had theirs re-lined before.

Thanks-Jim

Ok, I think I may have found the problem. I opened the left side housing and found that the connecting rod yoke has lost its pin that holds it to the upper assembly (or whatever you call it). Lavoy, do you know what size pin it is and have you ever tried to reconnect one through the housing?

Jim, Yes, I remember that one, how bout you send it back, still regretting that one. :( My guess is that you added some wear to the bands or the drums. Pull the top covers off of the clutch housing, and tighten up the brake bands with the adjusting nut. Takes a straight blade screwdriver, tig...

Hi Lavoy, Crawler will still stop and turn with the steering brakes, but, there is little tension in the foot brake, it freely pushes forward and won't stop the crawler whatsoever. p.s. this the crawler you sent to San Jose a few years back. It's been a great machine, still starts like a charm and h...

420 foot brake out

Hi all,

I have a late model 420. I drove the crawler about 150 feet with the foot brake locked  and now it doesn't work at all. The left and right side steering brakes still work fine. Please tell me I didn't screw something up big time. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Lavoy, the 420 crawler I bought from you is the same way. The clutch pedal does not depress far enough. I can't take the battery out unless I crawl under the crawler and unbolt the pedal.
BTW, the old girl is still running fine, and enjoying life in sunny California.

What diameter material can it handle? I was looking at something that could manage 5-6 inches in diameter.
Thanks for all the responses-Jim

PTO Chipper

I was just wondering if anybody has any experience running a PTO chipper on a JD crawler, (or on any tractor for that matter)? I have a 420C with 3pt and pto, and was considering getting a pto chipper. Any thoughts on this? Do the pto chippers works as well as a chipper that has its own engine? Than...
