Jac, I've started my 440 either way. With the air cleaner inlet, I just give it a "one one-thousand" squirt up under the cap with the throttle set just above midway and she starts pretty quick regardless of temp. There is a plug on the blower housing right in the middle. I think it's a 3/8" plug if ...

Gary,
What do they say."Desparation is the mother of invention." sounds like a good fix. What did you use to heat the ring gear?

Brad, Sorry to hear the bad news. Being a sleeved block, is the crack somewhere that possibly could be repaired? I'm sure someone has come across this before. It's an intricate block but with the welding technology we have today maybe there's a possible fix. If the blocks were the same as a 2-71, th...

What...no atomic weight comparisons???

Oh...sure...thanks Lavoy...NOW you post the ash content, now that I'm blowing carbon deposits the size of Monarchs!!  Actually, after reading that last bit of info, I'll look into getting Delo 100 for the next oil change. Once again Lavoy, you've outdone yourself. This site has to ...

The guy in the Detroit shop I spoke with was so quick to spit out "Delvac 1340" it didn't seem like there were many options in his mind. He'd been working them for 20 years so I didn't question his knowledge on the matter. When I looked it up, Delvac 1340 is no longer being made. Delvac 1640 is its ...

For the 2-53, Delvac 1640 is what the Detroit shop I spoke with recommends. The guy at the hyd shop I deal with crossed Delvac 1640 with Delo 400. I've been using the Delo so far. Hope this helps.

Paul, As long as your shop has enough in the way of tooling to handle any engine rebuild, you should make out ok. You've been around this site long enough to hear some of the "been there, done that" problem solving methods which deal with all sorts of machines. With a site like this to reference, al...

Thanks for the offer Country. Right now the problem is going to be getting this unit out of a tough spot for a machine that can't start by itself and drive out. I'm running into costs for equipment to assist with the loading onto a trailer that more than doubles the cost of the machine. At this stag...

Thanks for the info. Is there a way to turn the engine over without using the starter? I'm curious if the motor on this particular crawler is frozen or not. Is there a crank bolt on the front I can put a socket and breaker bar on to try a turn or two? Thanks.

1959 440 IC w/loader dimensions

Would anyone happen to have accurate dimensions for a 440 IC w/loader. I believe it's the 831. I'm looking for length and weight primarily. Thanks.

I'd find a post alright, then beat the owner senseless with it(which probably wouldn't take much!) then plant the post for the mailbox and take the machine. (because it's a hazard to motorists :) ) Some people just live too gifted a life. What a waste.

Rick, If the pump has cavitated, pressurizing the fuel supply going in is the quickest was to clear the air pocket. If you had a cheap but clean plant sprayer that you could put a gallon of fuel in, you could connect a hose to your inlet and just pump it up to prime the injector pump. At least that ...
