if it is still holding the pump I would just leave it until you have another reason to take the pan off???

so you are rebuilding a front mount pump? were did you get parts other than seals and bearings?

40c backfire
When it is running and backfiring, try holding spk plug wire off but close to the top of plug and see if it is firing consistently or missing one and then firing the next, try this on both plugs one at a time. Just a thought

40c backfire
My 40c did exactly the same thing and what I found was that the pivot pin on points was sticking and some times points wouldnt operate and when they did it would backfire, this was an intermittent problem not continuous
