Worn guides are not going to put smoke out the vent. My guess is worn or broken rings. Since the engine probably has a lot of time on it, I would recommend a complete overhaul. Do it yourself and it is not that expensive.

smoking
tjdub, the comment was for blow by and not exhaust smoke. Blow by will put a lot of smoke out of the vent pipe.

blowby
I overhauled a 450 that had a lot of blowby. I was told by a mechanic to be sure and check the liners. When you pull them, there are a few o-rings you have to replace but the important item is to look for cavitation erosion. All 4 liners in my 450 had pitting from cavitation and two of them were dee...

The tank on a 450 does vent through the cap. Make sure you did not install an unvented cap or paint the vent over. If not, clean the vent and blow it out. If I remember corectly, it is about a half inch circle of porus material in the center.

My first 450 crawler loader.
Back in 1980, one of the fellows at work knew I had a 450 dozer and he wanted to sell me his 450 crawler loader. He said it was locked in second gear and didn't have much power. The JD dealer had made a service call and claimed the transmission needed to be rebuilt, cost $4500 to get it running agai...

Monitor your hydraulic level a bit better. You should never get the the point of losing hydraulics and uncovering the screen. That cover is a simple 3 bolt plate with a gasket. Make sure the bolts are snug but they are 5/16 so don't twist them off. If they are snug, you will have to drain the hydrau...

You never fully explained why someone said you needed new steering clutches. One side or both? Is it a clutch issue or a brake issue? Please elaborate. RE the hydraulics being weak. The crawlers pumps are open circuit continuous gear pumps. If all functions of the hydraulics are weak, then the sourc...

I am a litle late for this topic but here are my thoughts. I have owned 3 JD 450's , one 450 crawler loader, 2 JD 550 dozers, one of which I completely rebuilt, one 450C loader with backhoe, three 450C dozers, one 450B dozer and a 750 dozer. The crossmember on the 450, B and early C were always a pr...

The shaft with the problem was the middle shaft in the transfer case. If has another gear that should spin freely on that shaft via a bushing. I was able to purchase the rotating gear but not the shaft (no longer available). I took the shaft to Flame spray to have it repaired. I had not measured how...

410c Backhoe problem
I have been working on this project off and on for about 10 months. I fished out lots of metal pieces even up to the size of 3/8 by 1/2 and around .007 thick. It looked like pieces of a thrust washer. With some extra help, I finally got the transmission dropped out. I pulled it out from under the tr...

There are two main problems I did not like about the 450 and 450B. The dry clutches were are repeated maintenance item. The wet clutches in the 450C was a huge improvement. The next problem is the wear on the front crossmember. It was another huge improvement when they began using the rigid crossmem...

blade pivot
The blade plates will also have wear. If you build those up flat, you will need the shims. If it is too small a clearance, the cylinder will not be able to tilt the blade while digging.

One is dead center and is the fill. The other is about a 1/2 inch higher and to the right some and is the bleed relief to prevent blowing the seal.
You can remove the tip from a grease gun and the fitting will screw right into the hole. I just fill the gun with 30 wt oil.

rollers
The newer style roller uses oil and not grease. They have two allen screws. One for fill and one for bleed to prevent blowing out the seal. Take a small tool and dig the dirt out of the allen screws. I would fill with oil first and see if you can get them to rotate. It soulds as if they are low or d...
