Chainsaw fuel
Was in the local Stihl saw shop a few days back. I see they are selling premixed 92 octane 2 stroke gas in sealed containers quarts-gallons and 5 gallons with guaranteed shelf life of 5 years or more. One of the mechanics in the shop also said that ethanol is very hard on fuel lines and carb diaphra...

Old IH crawlers
Check out King of Obsolete on the web. He keeps a small fleet of TD6's-TD9's and TD18's building ice roads and hauling cat trains in northern Manitoba. So far as AC's go there are still a few HD5's and 6's kicking around in northern BC. When high way maintenance was still done by the provincial gove...

Steel plates on 450 loader
I was looking at a 350C 6 way dozer that had a similar treatment except the straps were welded on instead of bolted and weld was cracked on one side. This machine was equipped with winch and skidding arch. Is there any sign of cracking or weld repair where the side frames bolt onto the steering clut...

350 won't start
Yet another consideration is oil viscosity. If you are using 15-40 you may not crank fast enough in temps down around 10 degrees F or less. Summer diesel can complicate matters as well. Throw in a weak battery. Heat will help with all these issues. If the machine is in a sheltered location even a 15...

350 not starting
How cold was it when you tried starting it? My 350 is unlikely to start below about 20 degrees F without heat. Was it cranking quickly? A weak battery will greatly reduce cold starting ability. If it is not really cold and the engine is not firing with ether a weak battery is a likely cause. If the ...

Final drive lubricant
I have used and believe the service manual allows the use of 80-90 gear oil in final drives and transmission of straight 350 and 350B dry clutch machines. Hydraulic reverser and wet clutch-brakes (350C) requires 303-Hyguard.

450 stopped moving
Definitely sounds like a clutch problem if nothing is turning past the pressure plate. My 450C had something similar happen to it. In my case there is an interconnect linkage between the engine clutch and the HLR that broke and allowed the HLR to move into and stay in the declutched position. Former...

JD 400
One consideration for down the road might be how parts specific the 400 series are. I personally have only seen one out west and heard of a couple more in 20 some years I have been paying attention to small crawlers. Is there anything specific to the 400 that might be difficult to procure? Someone a...

Upgrade from 350
My 450C pushes stumps and piles pretty effortlessly that would be a real workout for my straight 350. The 350 can be moved on a 14000 gvw dual axle trailer with a 1 ton pickup while a 450 will need a tridem or tandem dually trailer set up and a more substantial truck. And from the sounds of things a...

Not sure if I am mis reading something but it sounds like you have a direction reverser problem either linkage, valve adjustment or internal clutching if you cannot get any motion when forward is selected. So far as steering goes, does it look like anything is happening when you look through the adj...

450C outside dozer backhoe mounting parts
Hi. I am looking for the forward equipment mounting brackets that the forward end of a back hoe mounting hook attaches to on a JD 450C outside mount dozer (6410 style). They pin onto the front cross bar and through the eye on the clamp for the rear cross bar. JD part numbers are BU40038 and BU40039....

350B regulator
I put a Delco 1 wire alternator on my straight 350 a few years back. You may need to modify your existing alternator pulley. Easy install, works well and my total cost was a little over $110.00 with a freshly rebuilt alternator.

450C root rake
I have a root rake/piling blade to fit a JD450C outside dozer. Only problem is it is in far Northwest British Columbia, Canada. Guessing about 2500 miles away. Shipping might cost more than having one fabricated locally.

Hydraulic reverser whining in reverse
It is normal for early model 350 reversers to whine in reverse due to some straight cut gears. Should not whine in forward. Not wanting to engage in fwd or reverse is another issue though.

350 engine removal
If it is anything like a straight 350 the engine comes out pretty easy. Remove dozer and C frame if it is a dozer. Remove loader bucket and support loader in fully raised position if it is a loader. Disconnect battery. Remove the nose cone, exhaust stack. Disconnect suction and pressure lines from h...
