It sshould be a steady stream--you got pump trouble or air on the suction side--the restricted fitting screwa into the head and is usually an elbow but could be a straight fitting altheough I havent seen one on this JD application. Dip your suction line in another fuel source( glass jar) so you can...

440ICD
No way water can get into trans from engine. This is a common problem for any tractor/dozer that has a top tower gear shift as water can telegraph down the shift lever directly into trans. when boot gets old and dry. I just cant seem to get it all out and the dozer sat for a year for engine and fin...

4 spd trans
I have a 440ICD w/4 spd that I have changed and rinsed out with diesel 3 times so far and it still looks as though it has water in the oil. I cover the gear shift tower every time I shut down with a long can that reaches down over the tower, I also cut a piece of inner tube and put it over the gear...

pop pop-- the top ring is the "fire ring" and if it starts to let compression by due to too much honing, you will destroy your cylinder kit (piston, liner, and upper rings) I will see what my friend that is still in the business gets for a liner and let you know---J.M.O. I wouldnt chance it unless y...

440ICD
One thing for sure gentlemen, from an OLD DETROIT GUY, if you prime the fuel filter with ATF or anything else other than diesel on a detroit you stand a very good chance of blowing an injector tip right off especially on the "N" injectors. Lets all love our diesels no matter what brand they are, I ...

Detroit Diesel OIL
Bragging a little-- I worked on the first 149 series to go out to a customer. It came to unit rig & equipment co. Tulsa OK. It was installed in a ore hauling truck called an "M 200 lectra haul" It actually ran a big gen set that supplied power to wheel motors and also was used for dynamic braking (...

Detroit Diesel OIL
GENTELMEN: DO NOT USE MULTI-VISCOSITY OIL IN DETROITS. USE DETERGENT OIL, 30 OR 40 WT DEPENDING ON AMBIENT TEMP. OUTSIDE--HOTTER=HEAVIER. I WORKED FOR DETROIT DIESEL FOR SEVERAL YEARS AND SORT OF SPECIALIZED IN 53-SERIES. RUN THEM FAST AND KEEP THEM COOL AND GOOD OIL AND YOU WONT HAVE TROUBLE. UNFO...

I'M LATE ON THIS TOO BUT YOU CAN TAKE A COMPRESSION CHECK BY REMOVING THE INJCTORS ONE AT A TIME AND JUMPING THE REMOVED FUEL LINES TO KEEP THE FUEL FLOWING . YOU NEED A SPECIAL COMPRESSION GAUGE FROM DETROIT DIESEL (VERY EXPENSIVE UNLESS YOU ARE IN THE REPAIR BUSINESS) USE THE INJECTOR HOLD DOWN CL...

I KNOW I'M GETTING HERE LATE BUT DETROITS DO NOT HAVE THAT MUCH FUEL PUMP PROBLEMS--THIS SOUNDS LIKE IT NEEDS A GOOD TUNE UP OR AIR RESTRICTION SOMEWHERE ALTHOUGH THAT WOULD CAUSE SMOKE. MAKE SURE YOUR FUEL LINES ARE CLEAR ESPECIALLY IF THEY ARE RUBBER LINES(EVEN STEEL BRAIDED IN RUBBER) AND OF COUR...
