Throw out bearing sleeve 420C
The sleeve that is a guide for my steering clutch throwout bearing is not attached to the bearing quill for ring gear. I noticed in the service manual it was supposed to be. When I originally took it apart it slid out with bearing so I slid it back in with bearing. Is there need for concern or will ...

I was wondering when You Paint a crawler do You Paint each individual peice then assemble or do You ass'y and then paint it?. I painted mine a peice at a time it looked pretty good till I run thru the first mud hole I came to.

Inspecting a 1010 diesel crawler loader
Keep in mind any dozer that old is going to need something done to it if not a lot. I fixed up a 420 a few years ago that I got givin to me and so far I've got around $8000 in it. But I've enjoyed every peice I've taken off and restored. $8000 is more than I think the dozer will ever bring but Ive h...

420 ring and pinion
I tore the ring gear loose from the hub recently and as I have been working on it I was wondering if I'm to hard on the machine or was it just time for it to go? Every bolt hole in the hub is broke out. All I done was put in in reverse to back up and it made a crunch noise and it was done.

420 transmission/differental
I was attempting to take my transmission out todayand found a nut, that holds the steering clutch housing on, to be rusted such that there were no flats or corners. I know I can blow the nut off the stud but is the stud replaceable? The nut is one of 4 inside the housing that are 13/16. Is it necass...

repair to 440 cast nose
Machinery hand book recomends brazing for the repair of cast iron, and I've had good luck with it. If one prefers welding a Palco 808 is a good cast rod that I've used, however there is a ton of ways to repair cast iron the way that suits You is the best.

Upon disassembling my 420 JD, I noticed a bearing quill above the PTO shaft. When I pulled the PTO and cover off I noticed thhe quill had no function and on the transmission inside the cavity was a splined shaft in line with the quill. What option was this for? The crawler is a 4 speed no reverser

420 won't move
Ring gear hub has failed, all of the bolt/dowel holes have broken out and it also trashed the ring and pinion. Does anyone know if John Deere still sells these parts?

420 won't move
Yeah, I've been looking at the service manual and it looks like I'll have to remove transmission and differental(lack of a better word) to work on it any way. So, might be a good time to rebuild everything anyway. I just did rebuild the engine, final drives, replaced rails and cleats, all 10 track r...

420 wont move
You can shift the gears freely with the engine running and the clutch out without any grind, however if the crawler is moving the gears grind if you try to put them in.(I had to have my wife pull me home with a tractor)

420 won't move
I was using my 420 today shoving some fallen trees out of the pasture and went to back-up and it made a couple of hunches and would' move forward backward or nothing. It is a 4 speed , doesn't have a reverser and the PTO wont go in without depressing the clutch PTO works fine. The shifter on the tra...
