Re: JD 1010 blowing coolant
Thanks for all the info. I took the engine apart and found the head gasket blown and the head is warped. when I get my shop service manual I will explore some more and decide whether to rebuild or replace. This is just something to pittle with while raining or cold.

Re: wallowed out hole fix
Thread inserts work well and helicoils do OK too. I've fixed many wallowed holes in my life, its hard to decide without seeing. If you can get to backside of the hole you can add a piece of metal with tapped holes and spot weld in or use nuts and spot weld in. Hope this helps.

JD 1010 blowing coolant
Got a JD 1010, just brought it home, blows coolant out the radiator fill while cranking. Is this a blown head gasket or is there something else that commonly cause this on a 2 cycle Detroit diesel. I've never worked on one of these type of engines. I've worked on VW diesels. Deutz diesels and perkin...

Gasket Sealers/Makers
I use Copper head shellac. I paint it on one side of gasket and apply luberiplate grease to the other side. If you ever want to take it apart to check something it comes apart easily and you can reassemble it a few times without replacing gasket

Yea, tranny fluid burns pretty well. I know most hydraulic oils are non-detergent to prevent the condensate in the system from mixing with the oil and causing regulator problems. years ago my uncle had me to weld on a lawn mower deck and it was magnesium it caught a fire and he threw it in the creek...

I own 3 tractors, 1977 IH 140, JD 420C and JD 50T and I have always used Valvoline 30W non detergent motor oil in them. I bought the 140 new and I have had the JD's about the same amount of time. 30W ND is getting hard to find. I remember in the 1960's people went from ND to Detergent and their engi...

Steering brake making unusual noise
My 420 did that a couple of years ago. I took it apart and found the square piece of metal that locates the band had broke off. If this is the problem do not try to weld it back on, doesn't work well save yourself a lot of work and time and get another one.
