Re: 350b reverser

I agree that adding a little more fluid in machines working in steep conditions is a good thing to do. The 350s we had were used as fire suppression crawlers and were always on an Ozark hill that was as steep as a mules nose!! The sump on a 350 reverser is basically in the middle of the unit. They o...

Re: 350 reverser

Check the adjustment for the "Rate of Shift" screw. Back it out a couple of turns and see if that clears your slippage.

Re: 350b reverser

Just to give a reason why you can ruin the shaft... most people don't remove the lube plug that is threaded into the end of that shaft. They put a puller and bearing splitter on and then push against that plug. Which is forced inside the shaft which causes the shaft to swell or swedge causing the be...

Re: Engine Swap

I get what you're saying about the unknown on the motor. And if you're going to have to go inside it to be sure then you may as well rebuild your motor. Two grand does seem like a good price on the back hoe. That will go pretty quick at that price. Is the guy willing to take an offer on the motor? J...

Re: 350 Clutch

Definitely has problems inside. I would say it is pull time. Take it all apart to see what the issue is and go from there.

Re: Engine Swap

Not sure exactly what you need as far as the total swap. 3500 isn't a bad price for a known, good turbo engine. Especially if it comes with the radiator flywheel. The problem is, every one you will find will of course be a great engine. It's just a crap shoot on that. As far as the swap itself, a gu...

Re: 400G steering concern

Nice!! Love the old 2520. I have a 1520 that I changed from gas to diesel. I took a 3179 engine out of a 350D and swapped everything over. Burns about a quarter of the fuel and got more HP out of it as well.

Re: 400G steering concern

There are linkage issues that can cause what yours is doing as well. But it still requires going inside to find out. I have seen the main anchor stud back out of the yoke. You can't adjust the brake at all when that happens. So, I'm betting on a brake band being bad.

Re: 400G steering concern

So... Couple of questions??? And then a couple possibilities. First question...does the steering clutch release on the left? Can you feel the clutch release before the brake band grabs? One possibility is that the clutch isn't fully releasing ahead of the brake band. Make sure the adjustment is corr...

Re: 350 Bottom Roller - Rebuildable?

Yes, they can be rebuilt if they aren't shelled out completely. Which is usually the case. If the ones you have are that loose then I would bet they are all toast. Check with Lavoy, the owner of this site. He may be able to help you out since he sells parts for these older machines. The up side to b...

The first one I helped with was on a fire line in Shannon county Missouri. Nothing like having a fire creeping up to motivate your progress. :D

Re: 1974 450b low oil pressure

The cases I was referring to in reference to your issue were bearings that were worn badly and causing low oil pressure. Which in turn ended up being full overhauls. These were engines with a boat load of hours on them and a couple of them came from units that were in very poor working conditions. L...

Re: 450E clutch adjustment

Sounds like a blown engagement seal on the forward clutch pack. If your machine stops on flat ground and reads zero for pressure then you have a piston seal leaking. Or some issue inside causing the pressure to fall flat and also causing a no change on your adjustment. I'm thinking your issue is dee...

Re: 1974 450b low oil pressure

Since you say this engine runs good, the first thing I would do is get another gauge and double check the original gauge. Fluid gauges can go bad the same as the electric ones will. Your oil pressure on an old engine will vary some from cold to hot. But after it is hot I always like to see at least ...
