Re: Cracked housing repair

I think these housings are cast steel, not cast iron. Cast steel is easy to weld, although a little pre-heat would be good. Cast iron is quite a bit trickier, you'd need to preheat the entire casting evenly and weld it stick with some nickel rod. In either case brazing is also an option too. Unlike ...

Re: Carco C12 winch.

My 40c has a Carco C3 that appears to be factory. However, the manual I have for it shows a Case crawler mount. Not sure how similar they are to the C12.

Re: Size

I'm 6'3", it's tight. However, if you have the stock seat pull the back rest pad off and just use the wood. Much better that way.

Re: Crawler 420 not starting...and worse

Check the carb and the points to make sure it's got fuel and strong spark. Sounds like you had a bad connection on the starter. My 40c is the best starting vehicle in my fleet. It can be zero out and even after sitting for weeks it will barely spin over twice before it fires and runs.

Re: John deere 420c winch....

I have a Carco C-3 on my 40c. It appears to have been a dealer option. The winch is too strong for the machine, pretty sure it would rip it in half if the blade was chained to something solid. I've pulled hitches of wood that outweigh the machine with it may times. As has been stated, electric is no...

Re: Diagnose the problem??

As others have said, sounds like a dirty carb. It doesn't take much gunk to cause an issue.

Re: 6 volt battery for JD 440IC

I've had a Deka for 5 years and it's been great. Before that I made the mistake of getting an inexpensive one from Tractor Supply and it lasted a year. The original battery hold down on my 40c was missing so I made one up with a piece of angle iron and some threaded rod. The previous owner just had ...

Re: Logging Arch for my 40c?

I did some rummaging and found the old roller fairlead from my rock crawler winch (I switched to synthetic rope on that which uses a hawse fairlead, the rope is incredible for recovery winches). It will work great for the side rollers but It will need a more stout bottom. I don't have any old track ...

Re: Logging Arch for my 40c?

OK, thanks for the input. I was a little concerned about a wheel arch being cumbersome in the woods, but it seems like by far the best approach. I have an old trailer axle with some good sized wheels and a bunch of steel in the scrap pile, so I'm going to try to put one together. The hardest part wi...

Logging Arch for my 40c?

I have a 40c that appears to have come from the factory or dealer with a Carco C-3 winch. I have not run across another one of these. I primarily use the crawler to skid firewood. It really works great, as it's small enough to get around my wood lot without making a huge mess. The one issue is that ...

Re: 420 6 volt starter

Or you could be like one of the previous owners of my 40c and just torch a hole in both sides of the toolbox big enough to slip the starter through  .

Greasable Blade Pins Worth the Effort?

I am in the process of swapping out the beat up blade assembly on my 40c for a nice 62 blade. The blade I'm swapping in looks like it had very little use, and there is virtually no pin or bushing wear. There is probably 3/8" of play in the lower bushings, and 1/4"in the cylinder lift bushings of the...

Re: Which is better 40c 0r 420c final drive housing

My 4 roller 40c has two different final drive housings on it, one is heavily gusseted and one isn't. I would assume the one with the gussets is a later model 420 that was swapped in. In comparing the two the gusseted one looks much more stout.

Re: Slight Cutting Edge Update

Sounds like a great fit. The month-ish of mandatory vacation we are all getting came at an inconvenient time, but hopefully it will all be over soon enough and we can all get back to normal living. Maybe it will even make us all appreciate what we have a little more too.

Re: komatsu pc10-6 mini excavator

Yes, avoid any grey market machine at all costs. I believe parts are somewhat better for the grey Hitachis vs. Grey market Kubotas and Cats are a nightmare from what I understand. They are often odd colors and have funky split booms as opposed to pivoting booms. My father had a grey market Hitachi E...
