Paul I don't have a winch on crawler. I will probably have to wait until I can get some help to work on it, if for no other reason than safety. I'm going to try to figure out how to take a picture and post it. And yes as you stated its in a pretty bad spot. Of course in East Tennessee I don't think ...

Tigerhaze Thanks for the advice. The pictures help alot. I have never posted any pictures but I may try that this weekend. It is a slight incline and the crawler is perpendicular to incline. I don't think it would roll if chocked. Otherwise I would have to move it 300-400 feet to the bottom of hill....

Thrown Tracks on 440 IC

Ok I have thrown the left side tracks half way off my crawler, which is a 1959 440 IC. It has a six way blade on it. It is deep in the woods on a small incline. What is the best procedure to fix it? Should I try to jack that side of the crawler up with some type of floor jack, place stands or blocki...

I had tried to look at the small hole after cleaning it. I just could not tell. I am going to try and clean them better and see what I can tell. Sounds like a logical explanation though unless like others suggested and they are sealed rollers. Thanks.

Thanks Lavoy
On these later oil lube rollers I see no way to lubricate them. If I'm understanding correctly are they permantly sealed and require no lubrication?

Lubrication of Idlers on 440 IC

I am doing maintanence on my 1959 440 IC gas. On the support idlers I just put in 80 weight oil till it overflowed. I got to my Rollers of which there are five on each side and noted I seem to have a problem. Only three of them on each side have what I think is referred to as a Button Head Fitting. ...

I think I got the right fluid then. Thanks Lavoy and the others for the good advice. This site is very helpful.

I suspect you are right. I'm doing my best to adhere to the service manual on this old machine as I'm going to ask a lot from it. Is Hytrans what the John Deere Dealer sells?

Duke: What color is your existing hydraulic oil? If it's light coffee colored or milky, you may have water in it, and this would be a good time to drain and refill fresh. Lavoy has said that he uses hydraulic oil in his machines - I've forgotten the specs (they're posted on this site in another thr...

1959 John Deere 440 IC Which Fluids?

I bought a 1959 John Deere 440 IC gas with a sixway blade a couple of months ago. It is in good shape but two cylinders for the blade leaked too bad to use. I took them off and had them redone. The arms were bent and it cost a arm and leg to have them redone. I had several questions if somebody coul...
