The starter will spin the same direction on either voltage, and regardless of polarity of the cables. Without getting too technical......I hope..... the only way to make one spin backwards would be to change the polarity of the field windings internally in relation to the armature. But anyway the sh...

Thanks Lavoy. Yeah, I figured that out about the 440 service manual. Actually I got the parts breakdown from Mother Deere herself; that was really all I needed. Also, all those thrust washers are available from Deere incase anyone is looking for them, and the clutch discs are too, but they are a bit...

Very impressive Ben. You are really going to knock one out of the park if it all looks that good. Too bad you dont have the innards for your reverser. The one on mine was in really bad shape. I even questioned if it was worth saving, but am glad that I decided to rebuild it, as it really is a cool f...

That's neat, that is a high serial number clutch type reverser 420. Had one, got another one in the shed that I am going to restore myself some day. Lavoy Yeah, took me a little reading in here to figure out what I had. I bought the service manual for it and then began scratching my head trying to ...

1958 420c basket case rebuild

Here are a few pics of my basket case 420c that I picked up this spring. This thing was scattered far and wide to the wind as you can see. The engine is completely disassembled and was in a barn 15 miles from where the rest of the machine was, along with the sheet metal and a few other pieces. This ...

Not to highjack the thread but LarryD what part of Ohio did your dad work. I'm from a part of Ohio where there were a ton of mines. He worked at Central Ohio Coal in Cumberland. I'm sure your familiar with the Musky if your from coal country. That is the mine it was owned by. Dad started out there ...

Awesome pics and an even better story to go with them. :) I to have started a project crawler this summer, and ironically, I too am a welder/machinist and run my own shop. I bought mine as a basket case, and through no intentional planning, the official start of me working on this project was on Sat...

Yes, there should be a master pin in the track chain. You should be able to identify it by just looking at it. It will appear a little different than the pressed in pins, as it will have some sort of a retainer to keep it from backing out of the chain on one side, and will have a head similar to a b...

If it was working correctly and then suddenly it isn't, it sounds like something in the clutch linkage has broken. Look it all over from the pedal clear to the clutch fork. You should probably find something broken or fallen out of place due to wear between those extremes.

Also, a good technique to repair stuff like this if you have the equipment is to drill and tap both ends of the repair and put a threaded stud between the two pieces at the center, then weld over that.

Yes, you will definately need to grind it back some to vee it out so you can get weld penetration deeper into the joint. It needs to be ground as deep as possible and still maintain original alignment for maximum strength. From the pic I would say put all the vee on the yoke side of the joint. As fo...

I had a time finding an odd oversized rings for my 420. Finally called Hastings piston ring co. and they took care of me. Take a look at their website......they seem to have just about anything you want. That is actually how I came to buy my crawler because the last owner couldn't locate .020" overs...

Lots of cracks........ as in, cracks to the outside of the block leaking coolant? Just thinking that lots of times blocks can be salvaged when they are cracked. It just takes a little work and a lot of attention to detail to do it. Either way...good luck with the overhaul.

Not meaning to sound like a know it all, but possibly the reason you can't find info or parts is because John Deere never made a 1010c in 1957. The 1010c wasn't produced until 1960 if I remember correctly. Hope this helps......no need to give up if its just a matter of finding the correct info.
