40C coolant leak
My 40C loses coolant slowly. Every few times I use it, I have to add a pint or so to the radiator. I see nothing on the ground. There is no white smoke coming from the exhaust, so gaskets are fine. The other day I noticed a little steam coming from the right side under the tin. Should I use a produc...

40C motor pulsing
At medium to lower rpms and at idle, the engine seemed starved for fuel; it would slow down, the gov would kick in, and the revs would increase. This happened only after the engine warmed up. While servicing the transmission, air cleaner, oil change, etc., I decided to replace the coil, plug wires a...

Transmission Oil Level in 40C
Folks: I just drained and refilled the transmission on my 1954 40C. The manual says 6.5 quarts, and I estimated the number of ounces each pump stroke on the bucket of 90 weight produced. When I got to the total, I checked the oil level and it was right up to the threads of the fill spout on the tran...

Fitting a winch to a 40C
I am wondering how I could fit a winch to my 40C and use the standard PTO shaft to run it. What winch should I be looking at? (Had an old abused Braden, but it was too far gone to repair) I am assuming I would have to create some sort of bracket to hold the winch in place. Since there can be a lot o...

Hydraulic Fluid Moisture in 40C
The hydraulic fluid in my 40C was clear and clean at the beginning of January. Now at the beginning of February, the fluid is a little milky telling me there's moisture in it. I don't leave this out in the weather and I don't head out to the woods to cut if it's raining or snowing. Before I spend $ ...

Oil Filter Cover Replacement?
I just changed the oil and filter in my 55 40C. But oil is now slowly seeping from the nut at the top of the cover. It's hard to be 100% sure about the bottom seal as oil slowly moved to where the cover meets the assembly. I tightened this as much as I dare. It wasn't leaking before, and I really wi...

No slam on your carb guy, but what exactly did he do as far as rebuilt. I have "rebuilt" a few rebuilt carbs over the years, and most people just soak them, put in gaskets and call it good. My guess is you have a plugged idle circuit, that is what I have found when I get the symptoms you describe. ...

40C idle pulsing after warm up
My "new" 40C idles a lot like my last one. After it warms up, the idle pulses, probably from 1000 down to 500 and back up; engine runs fine otherwise. I just had the carburetor rebuilt before I started using it this winter, but was doing this before. Is this common? Where should I start?

Float ?
Same thing happened to my last 40C. Float had leaked, was full of gas. Flooded out. Let it sit, restarted OK until next time. Got a new float and never had the problem again.gregjo1948 wrote:Maybe a float problem. gregjo1948

40C hydraulic cylinder adjustment
Folks: The single hydraulic arm on my 1955 40C does not raise the blade as high as it might. At least 2" of the single piston arm is unused on a full lift because there is a stop pin that a collar hits and then stops the rise. The collar is all the way to one end. I can move the stop pin all the way...

8 Volt Battery
8 volt battery on a 6 volt system is really no gain…. I have never found an 8 volt battery that has any more than about 60% of the CCA of the 6 volt batteries I normally use, so your total available watts of power is still more with a 6 volt battery. What brand/model 6 Volt battery do you use? As a...

40C questions
l'm replacing my 40C with a different one I found just a few miles away. At first, I thought it was a 420 as it had the 420 decal on the side of the radiator. But the SN plate clearly says it's a 40C. So the seller's brother (original owner) wanted to think he had traded up! It has heavy duty snow c...

1955 40C For Sale
1955 40 C 4 roll for sale $2,500: I found a nice 420 and am selling this 40C. Blade is good, tin is good, and I have the original manual. Runs great. Original air cleaner missing, but there's a good filter directly on the carb. Converted 12 volt w/alternator. I had the carb rebuilt. It has tracks fr...

Braden Winch fo 40C
Hi All, new owner of a 1955 40C. I found a Braden winch not far away. It's been left outside for more than a few years. The yoke and "engager" is rusted a lot. The brake band seems to work, but the tall lever that engages the winch has broken off about 6-8" below what I think was the top. The cable ...
