Re: 430 vs 40c engine

Just the opposite! I have a 40 engine in my 420C. Bell housing and engine mounts bolt up. I have a mickey moused 2 piece upper radiator hose to adapt the 420 (I think) radiator to the 40 engine. The 40 carb inlet OD is, I believe, 1/8" smaller than that of the air cleaner (or that of a 420C carb.) m...

Re: Ignition / distrubutor problems??

My 420C had similar symptoms, as I noted in other posts. Changed engine (old engine needed rebuilding), Autolite plugs (Always ran them, even in my Corvairs), flipped the distributor bushing and changed cap (still trying to find info on replacing bushing), copper wires, 12 volt internal resistor coi...

Re: 6 volt change to 12 volt

My 420C had a 40 engine, and as I mentioned in other posts, it stopped running a couple months ago. Seemed like an ignition problem, but, as it had 85 lbs. pressure in one cylinder, and smoked a bit (what mosquitos?) I put in another used engine, with the help of T. Briggs, whom some of you may know...

Re: Early and Late 440 Final Drive Housing Interchangeability

I am an owner of a 420C, that someone installed a mismatched gearset on one side. I've had the dozer for about 5 years, now, and it's def a PIA. I just haven't had the time to tear off covers to count pinion teeth, but will be doing that shortly. One advantage of this setup is, when the blade is ang...

Distributor rebuild?

Has anyone replaced the distributor shaft bushing on their Johnny Popper? In my recent post, "12 v cap", or something like that, I started explaining my trials and tribulations, after my 420C died. Yesterday, I started typing a long dissertation, when my computer locked up and I lost it. I have sinc...

Re: 440 4 Sale

OK, while searching for info, starting from page 100 and working back, I came across the first post, by my neighbor, regarding the purchase of his 440IC. This is the dozer which is the subject of this thread. Kirk posted some great photos of his new purchase, and I can attest that it looks pretty mu...

Locate by Area

I wonder if there is a way to search for members nearby on this forum. Ie, a filter, similar to the one for members names?

Re: 440 4 Sale

I just spoke on the phone to the owner of this one, it's in Corinth, ME. Nothing wrong with it, he said, I've never met him. He's asking $4000. I'll be in Corinth in a couple days, and will try and take some pictures. It IS a Johnney Popper. (I think he's also selling the land that it's on, and I th...

Re: 440 4 Sale

This one's a gasser, "Johnney Popper", as I remember it had a "12 volt cap". It is pretty much covered with a tarp, so I haven't gotten a good look at it. I think the land it's on is also for sale! LOL I will be up there this week, so should be able to get more info, also photos.

Re: 12 Volt Cap

Some good info from you gurus! I had bought the 12 v cap a while back, as it seemed the thing to do. I had seen a 440 with a similar cap. At least t's easier to unhook the rear clip. LOL OK, I did put the original cap back on, and the engine ran well for a few minutes, till I shut it off. It was fir...

Re: 12 Volt Cap

Gonna try again, short and sweet! Why are the towers on a 12 volt distributor cap 90 degrees counterclockwise from those on a 6 volt cap? Also, when changing to a 12 volt cap, do you need to turn the distributor shaft (rotor) 90 degrees, or just the housing?

Re: 12 Volt Cap

I wrote another (long) paragraph and just about finished, when the computer started going nuts. Unresponsive, then adding unrelated pages, blocking JDcrawlers, then finally clearing out my reply. I wonder if anyone has had this problem? I am going to post this message to see if it goes thru, then wi...
