Re: 1958 John deere 420c track adjuster conversion possible?

Hi Guys, Regarding adjusting, once you get the nuts turning, I made a tool to adjust them. I took a common box-end wrench, sold for trailer hitches and cut a section out of the 1 1/2" end, just large enough to slip over the threaded rod. The cut out section is on an angle, so you hook the longer par...

Re: JD Online Parts List

I'm not happy with the Deere corporation anyway, ever since they eliminated R.N. Johnson in Walpole,NH and the one in Newport, Maine. Good thing I like John Deere's. At least they still support us in a small way, so that we can continue to maintain and USE our favorite toys. We have to support peopl...

Re: Alternator or Generator

Thanks, Jim B for answering and posting that link, I'm not good at that type of thing. Noticed you were from W. ME. Can you give me a whereabouts? Here or on PM, or not at all if you don't want, Lol. I still live in Spfld, Ma, but also have a house in Corinth, where I am usually, the middle 2 or 3 w...

Re: Alternator or Generator

Hi Folks This is not a recommendation, as I'm sure I will have to switch to a 12 volt starter eventually, but ... I've been running my 420C on 12 volts, neg ground, since I got it, about 5 years ago. Used to have a lot of cranking time till I put in a Pertronix and Flamethrower and inverted the dist...

JD Online Parts List

I read that Deere will no longer host their Part List online. Can someone explain? If so, How can we look up a part. I see the listing for 420 C comes up, but no prices, etc. I recently ordered a hydraulic pipe from JD, but it went thru a sub seller. JTP

Re: 440 4 Sale

I see that 440 is still sitting there. I believe Kirk posted some photos (on page 79). It would be a shame to see this just rust away. It has a #62 'Dozer, same as my 420C, or I would be jumping on it myself. Anyone interested can call me, Jason, at 413 348 6013.

Re: Angling 1010 Manually

I did a no-no this past spring, in Maine. When my neighbor got his 2-wheel drive pickup stuck in the ditch near my driveway, and several neighbors attempted to pull him out, they got him in worse. So, I brought ol' Johnny down and hooked under his bumper, to the hook on top of my blade, forgetting t...

Re: 6 volt change to 12 volt

Sorry, ddaxe, I just noticed your query, tho it was well answered. Yes, I believe it was an 1123, (I'm not near my info, presently) for 12 volts, negative ground. Also purchased the Flamethrower ignition coil, as is recommended. Although I've mounted an alternator, I have yet to set up a new wiring ...

Re: 430 vs 40c engine

Just the opposite! I have a 40 engine in my 420C. Bell housing and engine mounts bolt up. I have a mickey moused 2 piece upper radiator hose to adapt the 420 (I think) radiator to the 40 engine. The 40 carb inlet OD is, I believe, 1/8" smaller than that of the air cleaner (or that of a 420C carb.) m...

Re: Ignition / distrubutor problems??

My 420C had similar symptoms, as I noted in other posts. Changed engine (old engine needed rebuilding), Autolite plugs (Always ran them, even in my Corvairs), flipped the distributor bushing and changed cap (still trying to find info on replacing bushing), copper wires, 12 volt internal resistor coi...

Re: 6 volt change to 12 volt

My 420C had a 40 engine, and as I mentioned in other posts, it stopped running a couple months ago. Seemed like an ignition problem, but, as it had 85 lbs. pressure in one cylinder, and smoked a bit (what mosquitos?) I put in another used engine, with the help of T. Briggs, whom some of you may know...

Re: Early and Late 440 Final Drive Housing Interchangeability

I am an owner of a 420C, that someone installed a mismatched gearset on one side. I've had the dozer for about 5 years, now, and it's def a PIA. I just haven't had the time to tear off covers to count pinion teeth, but will be doing that shortly. One advantage of this setup is, when the blade is ang...

Distributor rebuild?

Has anyone replaced the distributor shaft bushing on their Johnny Popper? In my recent post, "12 v cap", or something like that, I started explaining my trials and tribulations, after my 420C died. Yesterday, I started typing a long dissertation, when my computer locked up and I lost it. I have sinc...
