while engine is out, would be good idea to check clutch, pressure plate, possible broken worn out parts, and clean clutch mechanisms and pilot bearing, any doubts replace.

i had same problem with oil pan on 2010 had lips all around and had to use fairly flexible putty knife and then one of wives long kitchen utensils to reach further til blamed thing got a bit loose...is cast as well and heavy booger

well i have a jd440ic as well...just to give you an idea of costs....i replaced 1 side of steering....new clutch pack (steels and fibres), throw out , sleeve and new brake band if i remember correctly that was a total of $650, though i do recommend that you read all the posts in regards to the jd440...
