Roosa-Master governor quit working....

Howdy Esteemed Experts, My 1968 JD450 track loader has been getting a workout lately. I'm digging a pond deeper. Yesterday AM, I go out and get on it and, first, it's hard to start. Next, I notice that the throttle doesn't change engine speed the way it used to.....it's just not very linear any more...

450 track adjustment

My last post was "450 track snap". I decided my tracks were a bit looser than spec and injected some grease into the Zerk and was pleased to see the front idler move obediently along the rail. But I got them too tight. Both the operator's manual and the service manual for the 450 (no following lette...

Thanks for the suggestions.....

I'll report back when I've studied the thing a bit more.

I didn't even know there was a spring in there.....I'm reading about it in the service manual now.

I'm not sure it's climbing the rollers but I am sure it's not rocks. I can't find a rock on this place. We do a lot of fencing and drill down 3.5' with a soil auger and I have yet to encounter a single rock. It's all fine sand and clay.

450 track "snap"

My 1968 JD450 does not seem to have very loose tracks. They barely sag between roller and sprocket on top. However, under some circumstances when turning I seem to get the track to ride up onto the flanges on the bottom rollers for a bit. When it falls back into place, there's a loud snap or bang th...

Yay!

I finally got all the stuff together to attempt a fix on that leaking crimp fitting. It was a cluster of equipment (engine welder providing 120VAC to Coll-O-crimp motor, all sitting on the tailgate of my pickup backed right up to the nose of the 450 so I could get the pump end of the new 1" hose int...

Thumb for Model 93 backhoe?

Howdy gang, My JD450 has a Model 93 backhoe on it. On the forearm, there's a reinforced bore about 2' back from the wrist joint that looks like it might have been the upper mount for a thumb cylinder! I would like to have a thumb on this hoe. Has anyone even seen such a thing on a Model 93? Thanks i...

Well, I spoke too soon about "no leaks". The front fitting is leaking at the crimp now....! It started out as a seep and after a couple hours of use has developed into a spray. I'm using Weatherhead brand 1" R16 hose and a fitting from discounthydraulichose.com that has a little boxed "K" trademark ...

Wow, Frank.... $100 per hose. That makes me real glad that I have my own crimper, a used Coll-O-Crimp (Weatherhead) that I got off Ebay a few years ago. I can make up a 5' long 3/4" hose for about $25-$30 worth of materials...if I buy the stuff from discounthydraulichose.com But, if I buy the fittin...

I am happy to report that siphoning out all the old diesel+algae from the fuel tank, purging the lines with clean diesel, and replacing the fuel filter has fixed my "engine running rough" problem. Apparently, the diesel was just starving for fuel due to an algae-clogged filter. Thanks for all the he...

Thanks a lot Leonard,

I like a detailed explanation.

BTW, during all the crawling under the tractor I did to replace my main hydraulic line I found my transmission leak!

The drain plug was barely finger tight! Drip.....drip.....drip.

Yay!

Thanks, Bryce! Now that you mention it the stuff did look rather like an algae mush. I had no idea algae could grow in diesel fuel. But it makes sense for this machine. It's seen very little use in recent years and has just been sitting with the tank half full. BTW, as a physicist, I just love the b...

Leonard (and all), I took off that Stanadyne filter today and was stunned to see what looked like mud oozing out of the inlet port when I tilted the filter. I've never seen such crud in a fuel system before. With the filter off, I pumped the primer lever on the fuel pump a couple times, which causes...

The hydraulic repair went well! It was not easy to wrestle that 1" hose into position and then get the old return line put back into position but, after about three hours of struggling with it by myself, I succeeded. I filled the reservoir with fluid, fired up the engine, checked for leaks, shut dow...

Thank you very much, Jason. I agree that something big would have to come apart to get that metal pipe out of there. I'm going to sawzall it into two pieces to remove it. The loop up in front and over to a 90 into the pump sounds like a plan. I'm working on it now and will report back here on how it...
