OK, they DID find a leak in the cap (transfer pump housing) and fixed it for "free".

I say "free" because it only cost about 3 hours of effort, a gallon of antifreeze, and a few grunts and groans.

I'll report back when I get the pump back on the tractor and see if reliable starting returns.

Roosa Master CBC pump saga continues

Howdy gang, It's been a while since I reported here but, after I got my RM CBC injection pump (off my 1968 JD 450) "rebuilt" by the local fuel injection shop, I started having starting problems. Things got to where the engine simply would not start without "ether". Upon inspection, I discovered that...

Thanks, Tigerhaze. AFAIK, my engine does not have glow plugs. There's no mention of them in the Service Manual and I don't recall any wires leading up to the cylinder head. The fuel filter might be at fault. I replaced it once in the beginning when I had a severe diesel algae problem and I expect it...

450 getting hard to start....?

My 450 has a recently rebuilt injector pump. Right after the rebuild, it seemed to start easily but maybe I was just starting it more often. Now, if I let it sit a week, it takes a lot of cranking to get the engine going. Recently I let it sit for a month between uses and it would not start at all.....

93 backhoe stabilizer cylinder rebuild.....?

Howdy gang, My 93 backhoe's biggest hydraulic leaks are in the stabilizer cylinders. When I got it, the rods were rusty and, despite my initial efforts to smooth out the rusty spots, the rod seals leak pretty badly now. I have removed the cylinders and disassembled one of them. Both the rod and pist...

Mark, I like your suggestion of removing the entire line but my lines are threaded up from the pump, through the gaps in the exhaust manifold, and onto the injectors. I think I'd have to straighten them out considerably in order to unscrew them from the injectors, no? Still, as a last resort, I agre...

Thanks for the advice, gang. KenP's came in first so I tried the heat method first. Since the 450 is way out in the field and I don't have AC power out there, I used a propane torch on the flare nuts. It only started a small fire once, which I was able to easily extinguish. Two of the three stuck nu...

Fuel line flare nuts stuck.....am I doomed?

It's been while, gang. I got my CBC Roosa Master injection pump rebuilt by some local folks that knew all about it and started installing it today. It went back on OK but there is a troubling issue: When I loosen the flare nuts that connect the fuel line to the injector nozzles, the nut and line tur...

TJE, I've got a 450 loader. That 7450 number is the loader's model number, right on the dashboard where everybody sees it and mistakes it for the tractor's tag. The tractor's tag is located under the seat on the metal panel that your heels would hit if you slid your feet backwards. It's on the right...

It's time I tried to be helpful on this forum....watch out! My 450 seemed hard to start until I changed my procedure. Now I open the throttle all the way while cranking and pull it back quickly as the engine starts so as not to race a cold engine. Also, the manual recommends depressing the clutch pe...

History of Roosa-Master pump development

I found this nice article about the development of the Roosa-Master injection pump and the important role it played in expanding the use of diesel power throughout industry and agriculture. Apparently the design of these pumps was a great innovation over existing designs and the credit all goes to V...

That's what it was, Tigerhaze. Ken makes a really good point. My CBC has worked just fine for 45 years. It's a great pump!

Thanks again, gang. Finally getting serious about looking at the tag on the pump, it's a CBC 431 3AL. Searching around the internet, I found an old thread on this forum started by KenP that led mainly to sorta bad news for owners of this pump needing repair. I can't imagine the situation is better n...

Thanks, KenP, I was about to despair of looking for a flex ring in the Model C service manual....:) BTW, my governor is not fixed. I ran the machine yesterday again and maybe it worked a little when cold but once I got going properly it was clear that the governor does not work at all anymore. The t...

Thanks Leonard, I got a copy of the Roosa-Master service manual (SM2045). Mine is a Model C and, as far as I can tell, doesn't have anything called a "flex plate". Instead, the governor is a compact little gadget with flyweights at the forward end that push rearward on a linear-moving metering valve...
