Re: 555G what plugs to pull and location to drain transmission hydraulic oil

The lowest drain is under the tank at the back of the machine. The fill is the same hole as the dipstick. You will need to clean the screen at the front of the tank. Probably good advice to get a book on the machine.

Re: 455G Transmission Question

Just a follow up. I brought a complete rebuilt transmission unit and it was easy to swap it out.

Re: Dozer purchase JD Dozer comparison/info

I pulled it at 6800 hours +-. I think the long periods of sitting (months at a time) didn't help as the clutch plates aren't submersed unless the machine is running. Not sure but that is what I was told by a mechanic. I opted to have a firm provide a rebuilt replacement due in next week. It was $650...

Re: Dozer purchase JD Dozer comparison/info

I don't know much about the 400 but the G series transmissions are quite easy to deal with. Just took mine out a few weeks ago and it took about an hour. I had a mechanic take it to his shop and tore it down in a few hours. If you can get to the strainer screen under the floor panel you can see just...

Re: 455G Transmission Question

I appreciate the opinion. Looks like I am heading to the change of gears. $4k is a huge number and hope to find the parts cheaper. They are discontinued by JD so the cost for these are a premium and I may have to look used.

Re: 455G John Deere dozer

The drain plug for the transmission is under the rear tank on the right side just in front of the rear weights. It is a 1/2" drive recessed bolt head. Not sure what you'll be able to see but that is where you drain the fluid. To refill use the dipstick hole with a funnel.

455G Transmission Question

I have a 1994 JD 455G track loader and had transmission problems. Removed the transmission unit and took it to a shop to be rebuilt. The JD AG dealer took it apart and did a material take-off that included some expensive gears so I went to the shop to view them today. The 3 parts that make up about ...

The hydraulic filter is after the screen. I've changed both of them and they seem clean...although I will replace again when I put humpty dumpty back together again. Yes, it looks like fiber, bits of rubber and some goo. I did change some hoses and have a couple more to change. I don't have many lea...

410 Screen Filter

I've got a straight 410...Army model from 1975+- I had hydraulic problems a couple years ago and found it was that screen tube filter at the bottom of the tank. I don't use the machine much and expect maybe 50 hours (over 2 years) and it happened again....just checked the screen and it was clogged a...

Weather finally broke and I got the time to get back to it. 4th gear worked. I opened up the linkage and transmission controller area under the seat and battery box. Spent much of the weekend cleaning out the dirt and oily debris which pretty well fill up the whole area. The linkage appears to be wo...

I'll check out 4th on Saturday. I was looking in the JDparts website and it appears based on parts the 1st/2nd and 3rd/4th have some relation to each other based on gears or clutch plate parts.

Yes, checked fluid for both trans and hydraulic and all was well. When it first started missing second it appeared it kicked out when I touched the steering brakes. It still will go into second once in awhile but it doesn't appear to be maintaining a consistent speed when it does go into 2nd. 1st an...

Thanks for the reply Leonard. I am going to buy the full service manual today. In the meantime do you think I can still use it for minimal work where I don't need 2nd due to tight quarters work? Oddly the 1st and 3rd were working perfectly with no hesitation at all. Thanks again for the reply as I c...

455G Gears

I have a 1995 455G track loader and seem to have lost 2nd gear in forward and reverse. It worked fine on Saturday but by the end of day Sunday it was pretty well just a blank spot in the 2nd speed position. This is a direct drive model. This thing does sit for long periods of time but the machine wa...
