It is not a choke but a fuel shut off. The only way to shut down a diesel is to either stop the fuel (or shut off the the air) since there is no spark like a gas engine. I cannot tell from the picture if it is connected properly. Your service manual will explain it. The shutoff lever should be well...

Been rather busy with other crap lately. Trying to build a house is one thing, dealing with banks is a whole 'nother... and the $#$^&@@@ power company!!! Got to spend a little more time working on the three point hitch. Got the hydraulics plumbed with no problem. Just added another slice to the valv...

It's a 440icd with an 831 loader. I've posted several pic's in this column in the past. Ugly as sin, pulls stumps and stacks them for burning like you wouldn't believe. Now I'l looking for a box blade, landscape rake, maybe a grader... And I think we all know that other hitch went to somebody who ha...

Well, I found this honest to goodness bonafide Deere three point hitch more or less complete at a junkyard and asked the guy how much. He said "a lot". I said "okay, I'll take it". He said "I'll get it off and get back to you on the shipping charges". Two weeks later I called back to check on progre...

Before you start pulling things apart... If you have an inch and a half socket, it'll fit on the nut on either the cam or balance shaft weight. Try rocking it both ways to see it it will move. If you got water in a cylinder, hand cranking the engine backward will allow it to clear via the air box. A...

You got a 440 alright. Is that a diesel? More Pics Please! I've seen worse. Who am I kidding... I own worse! Some controversy about the backhoe mounts... Folks say there are different/heavier mounts for the backhoe but the parts manual shows parts for everything but the 440 with 831 loader. Crawlers...

pads only go one way on the chain. the two notches fit over the narrow end of the NEXT link. My machine had one track going one direction and the other opposite and ALL the pads were on backwards. this is the same machine that had the oil pan on backwards and someone torched a new hole in the skid p...

big idler swap?

any reason why one of the solid disk front idlers from, say for instance, a 350 fit, uh, maybe a 440? found several very old cracks on one of mine. not too happy about it. tend to push things a bit. any new crack might go all the way through... somebody got one each they could stand side by side and...

Pinion quill and bearing.

Check the pinion quill above the axle shaft on the final drive. It's a round cover held on by three bolts (or some bolts and some studs). If it's loose or missing the entire clutch pack can move outward. If the bearings contained within have crumbled, same problem. Replacing the clutches isn't as ba...

if you're referring to having the final drive hanging... There are two bolts underneath the clutch housing. They are threaded into the final drive housing so nothing shows from outside. If you have the rear skid plate (lucky dog) you'll need to drop it to get at them. Or at least that's what I hear ...
