Re: 40c Roller interference

Crossbar clamps are tight. Regular nuts, or bolts, attaching side frame to clutch housing. All dozer mounting clamps are loose and just floating around. Also, all pivot points on the dozer are very worn and sloppy. Lots of work to do here.

Re: 40c Roller interference

Thanks lavoy. I will follow your advice. Don't know how much of the rivet holes are left, hopefully enough to locate the plate properly and I will use bolts and weld as suggested. The plate looks like it haas taken quite a beating over the years and also tore a piece ouf the sideframe where the plat...

Re: 40c Roller interference

Pretty rare in this area. Not many of these old crawlers or parts for them available. Shipping from the US, Trump duties/tarriffs and the exchange rate make the cost of thigs like this pretty prohibitive.

Re: 40c Roller interference

Took the rear fender off today so I could get a better look at the side frame. As I mentioned before, it looks like someone tried, not very sucessfuly, to weld the bracket that the cross frame bolts to, back on to the side frame. The area of the side frame, that the bracket was originally riveted to...

Re: 40c Roller interference

Hi Lavoy, just took a quick look at the side frame. The rear bracket on the side I am having trouble with looks like it has had an amatuer welder attach the rear bracket to the frame and it has broken away again.Guess it's time to drop the frame and have the brackets welded properly. Were they origi...

No such luck! That would be an easy solution.

40c Roller interference

Problem with one of my tracks. It's a 4 roller 40c and one rear roller is interfering with the sprocket on that side. This was a derelict tractor that I purchased years ago and ran more or less successfully for several years. Last year I put a new to me used track on one side and decided to replace ...

Re: Adjusting 40c Track

Thanks Jim. You are probably correct. I have everything free as I recently installed a new to me track that is in good condition and rebuilt the rollers with new seals. I will get it as close as I can to spec and then do the recommended proceedure to confirm it is correct.

Adjusting 40c Track

Instructions say to adjust track and then drive straight for 100' on level ground to test. Can I accomplish the same test by jacking up the track I am adjusting and then, using the steering clutches, just run that track for several revolutions to see if it is close to correct? I have the dozer in my...

Re: JD 6V vs 12V Battery – Advice Needed

I have a 40c and my son-in-law has an MT, both with original 6 volt systems. Both machines will start quickly and easily as long as points, condenser, etc. are in good shape and the battery and starter have a good ground. Usually 12 volt batteries were installed to compensate for problems in the res...

Re: 1952 MC crawler

My 40c starter will jam once in a while. I find that if I loosen the nut and tapered bolt that locks the starter in place and then pry the starter away from the flywheel a bit, the bendix will usually come free. Shove the starter back in place, install and tighten the bolt and lock nut and away it g...

Re: Sprocket stuck on final drive

How about loosening the bolts a bit and driving around the yard? Works on old car hubs, wheel nuts etc. Sharp turns might put enough stress on on the rust between axle flange and sprocket. Be careful and check frequently.

Re: 440 back firing

Coil should be 6 volt. Make sure that centrifugal advance in distributor is not stuck and will return ok if you turn the rotor against direction of rotation and then let it go. It should return with a definite click. Could be stuck or have broken/weak springs.

Re: Track Alignment on 40c 4 roller

OK. Through trial and error, I found that if I tighten the track (move the idler forward) on the side with the most clearance, that solves the problem. I did this with the tractor lifted on the side I was working on so I could run that track after each trial adjustment. I'll see what happens after I...
