Re: 440 back firing

Coil should be 6 volt. Make sure that centrifugal advance in distributor is not stuck and will return ok if you turn the rotor against direction of rotation and then let it go. It should return with a definite click. Could be stuck or have broken/weak springs.

Re: Track Alignment on 40c 4 roller

OK. Through trial and error, I found that if I tighten the track (move the idler forward) on the side with the most clearance, that solves the problem. I did this with the tractor lifted on the side I was working on so I could run that track after each trial adjustment. I'll see what happens after I...

Track Alignment on 40c 4 roller

I have recently done some work on my undercarriage-rollers, idler track chain etc. and now need to adjust my track alignment. I have both the JD Service Manual and the the JD Operator's Manual. I am a bit confused. The Service manual says "tighten adjusting nut on tension bolt at side of track frame...

Re: 40c 4 roller track alignment

Makes perfect sense but would never have thought of doing it that way. Should patent that tool-a string and a nail :D

40c 4 roller track alignment

OK, I am confused (which is nothing new). I installed a new to me track on my crawler and am trying to align it properly. According to the Service Manual, I should "tighten the adjusting nut on tension bolt at side of track frame that shows the most clearance between the idler flange and track link"...

Re: Gearmatic winch on a 40c

Thanks Lavoy. I'll see what happens. If I can get the winch at a decent (low) price, then I will worry about finding the shaft.

Gearmatic winch on a 40c

I might have a chance to pick up a Gearmatic winch from a junked 420c. Is the power shaft and housing the same for the 420 and 40 or will I have to find one specifically for my 40?

Re: 40c Ignition problems

I tried to test the old condenser that wasn't working (previously sourced from JD) and the lead wire fell out. Didn't look burnt, just disconnected.

Re: 40c Ignition problems

Just wanted to give a nod to Lavoy and a thanks for supplying quality ignition parts at a reasonable price. Picked up mine, points, condenser, rotor and dist. cap, from the shipping depot on the weekend. Quality parts made on this side of the pond, fit well and the machine started up, which it would...

40c Ignition problems

Is anyone else experiencing problems with condensers? Drove crawler out of the garage and parked it a couple of months ago. Now won't start. Power to distributor but no fire at the points. The coil is relatively new and I did replace points and condenser a few years ago with aftermarket parts now su...

Re: 40c Steering Clutches

Just an update on my progress with the stuck steering clutches. I took the final drive apart again and measured the thickness of the assembled pack and the individual discs. Lavoy was correct in suggesting that the fiber discs had swollen and their total thickness was not allowing the clutch to dise...
