Re: Tach not Work on 420 Crawler

Lavoy, Thanks, when I get a bit more time and it warms up a bit, I will check it out. Right now the gasket on the front light is bugging me. Do not know why it is not fitting right. Thanks Larry Lavoy, Busted cable at the far end where the cable connects onto the metal piece. Sent you a PM via e-ma...

Re: Crawler 420 not starting...and worse

I connected up the starter yesterday but ran out of time to start it. I went out this afternoon and it fired right up. I did not know the starter could crank the engine over that fast. I had just put on an Optima battery, but probably a cleaned up starter and a new saddle switch did the trick. I che...

Re: Crawler 420 not starting...and worse

Having your battery on the fender may be part of the issue. With 6 volts your cables have to be twice the gauge or half the length that they would be on 12 volts. If your wire to the starter is longer than factory, then also make it heavier than factory. Thanks, yep I paid I think $45 to get NAPA t...

Re: Crawler 420 not starting...and worse

I stock all of the components to rebuild starters if need be as well. Lavoy Thanks, I will keep that in mind. I responded to Paul Buhler as to what the shop did and what I paid (see my message to him). I paid some hefty tuition but it is fixed (at least worked on the bench). It is minus 2 now at 1:...

Re: Crawler 420 not starting...and worse

Mr. Bookman: I rebuilt my 420 starter a number of years ago. It’s pretty easy. I picked up new brushes, and new bushings, and starter switch online. Had it out, cleaned up, and disassembled very quickly. Happily, the armature and fields were still good. Crocus cloth cleaned up where the brushes rub...

Re: Crawler 420 not starting...and worse

Yes that is what mine has currently Thanks, I go the starter back from the starter place They only had it a day. I think the main problem was in the saddle switch but they cleaned up a bunch of other stuff. I hope to get it back on in the next couple of days. It bench tested out just fine. Thanks t...

Re: Crawler 420 not starting...and worse

Yeah, we are below zero for the high next 5 days or so, not fun weather to work in. Make sure ground cable is good too, I have had them be an issue. Either way, a rebuilt starter is really sweet once you have them done. Lavoy Will one of the metal web ground cables work fine for a positive ground? ...

Re: Crawler 420 not starting...and worse

I hate to get in on this but if it fired on starting fluid and then quit then either the smoking wire was shorted and the cause needs to be fixed or your problem may not be electrical. If your compression is good it doesn't need to turn fast on the starter. I took the starter off today. The saddle ...

Re: Crawler 420 not starting...and worse

Is this still a 6 volt positive ground system with generator and the saddle mount starter switch on the starter? Is the wiring correct for a 420 or has it been modified? Things get changed over the years and I just want to be sure of what you have before guessing at what it is. Yep, still 6 volt po...

Re: Crawler 420 not starting...and worse

If the small wire is burnt, you have a dead short some place and most likely have no power to the ignition switch . Battery box must be removed or slid back past the RH side of the dash to remove the starter. I would bet 90% of the problems people have with their crawler on 6 volts is a starter bad...

Re: Crawler 420 not starting...and worse

They are very simple to take off, there is 2 studs with nuts that come out of the bell housing and the starter fastens to the 2 studs simply a matter unscrewing the 2 nuts and pulling it out. The reason i wondered is because we have a 40 utility tractor (1954) and it acted almost identical to what ...
