I see in the shop manual that it is recommended not to open anything up until those 3 pressure readings are taken. So that is what I'll do next....your description of what is probably happening sounds very feasible.

The rear end is free.....it rolls easily when pulled with a tractor......even when in neutral, when reverser is put in forward or reverse, it wants to kill the engine.

JD 1010 crawler won't propel forward or backward......when activating reverser in either direction, want's to kill the engine. Could this be a pressure valve problem?
