I'm glad my pressure gauge question could be a source of such amusement here. :P I still haven't been able to get used to pressure in kPa or bar, I guess I am stuck somewhere back in the 70s along with my dozer. But seriously, do most pressure gauges have a sealed mechanism such that as long as the ...

450C Jerky starts in forward and reverse
Finally got the undercarriage repaired on my (new to me) 450C (new rollers, welded up idlers, repaired both yokes, new hydraulic hoses all round) and did a full fluid and filter service. Machine runs great, pushes dirt and rocks strongly but is rough engaging forward and reverse when I'm using the H...

Thanks
Thanks Lurch - don't know why my searches at the very same fastener stores didn't turn up the options you found, good on you.
Deere only sells a replacement part which is a grade 8 cap screw, not a carriage bolt, requiring two people to effectively re-install it.

Rock Guards Grade 8 Carriage Bolts
Been shopping around to get some replacement carriage bolts for the rock guards on my 450C. No one that I have found makes Grade 5 or Grade 8 carriage bolts in the 5/8x9" size that we need, so I got some quotes on custom. In sufficient volume the cost for Grade 8 would be in the $12/each range + shi...

There are three pads that were bent and mangled and the edges of those pads that should ride over the next pad in the track were running underneath and causing the track to make loud popping noises every time they went over the sprocket - I know - it's a side effect of the severely worn pins and the...

Removing track shoe bolts
Is it even possible to remove these bolts? I have broken one wrench, rounded off half a dozen bolt heads with an impact, broken a pawl on a (cheapo) 3/4" ratchet. I'm getting the feeling they cannot be removed after 35 years of service. I ran out of acetylene on Friday doing other stuff, so I resort...

I have been looking at doing the same thing, putting in bushings, oversizing the worn out pivot holes, new pivot pins, whatever it takes to get the 6 way and the backhoe linkages back to usable state on my machine. After I get the tracks back on and the hoses fixed of course. Keep the pictures comin...

Wanted: Rippers and Winch for 450C
Just bought the 450C, it came with a backhoe, but no rippers or winch. Have some compacted dirt to break up and want to do some logging on the property, so could use both of these things - anybody in NorCal have some wasting away in their fields?

Long weekend wrenching
Well, spent the last 2 1/2 days doing my first-ever wrenching on a dozer. First order of business was how the heck do you block up a 14,000lb machine, 17,000lb with the backhoe. Spent some time thinking about it and decided to park it over the small pit with my lift in it and block up the front and ...

Well - as I power washed in prep for replacing bottom rollers I discovered why the left idler inside flange is so worn - the idler yoke is broken clean in half and is wedged inside the front track frame support, holding the left idler as an outward angle to the track frame - will post pics tomorrow....

You know, I'm just not sure on the keeper/few jobs issue. I have a serious hankering to make some money with this beast - been looking for a career change for a while now, and I love to fix and restore old machines (usually woodworking and machine shop stuff, but I am getting the feeling those are g...

Guy at the Berco dealer who does the P&B turns says they do 1/2 and 1/4 P&B turns on dry chains. First turn: rotate the bushing and pin 180 degrees (1/2 rotation). Next turn: rotate pin and bushing 90 degrees (1/4 turn). Third and last turn (if a chain ever makes it this far) is another 180 degrees ...

Interestingly - today while at the Berco dealer I took a look at some brand new chains, sprockets and idlers. My sprockets look almost the same as new sprockets - what am I missing in terms of wear there? The rails on the chains also looked just about as thick as new ones, the pin boss wear doesn't ...
