350 slow to idle
Need some adult guidance! Had the '68 350 out the other day skidding some logs on the property when I noticed that the engine was not decreasing RPM immediately when I moved the throttle lever to idle position. The RPM revs up without issue but it may take 15 seconds for the engine to come down to i...

Used the wolverine heaters in Fairbanks, Alaska on a Dodge diesel. 150W on the oil pan and 150W on the transmission. From dead cold engine and -40 temps and it took about two hours to warm enough to help. Most of the time I left my truck plugged in continually and it always fired up immediately even...

R&R the steering clutches is not that bad if you are mechanically inclined. The photos and advice on this forum are a excellent resource for information. From all the discussion and threads on the steering clutches it can and does sound like a daunting task but if you take your time and have the rig...

Well, I finally changed the reverser filter. Not a big deal to accomplish but from the looks of it the previous owner never even thought about it. The filter was JD OEM and it was coated with some nasty goo that looked like grease mixed with oil with a bit of water to make it really nasty. When I te...

Thanks! I was a topless shop mechanic for many years. Now I'm spoiled, big shop Jet mill/drill, press and 17" Lablonde lathe. Hard work really does pay well. This dozer is going to be used as a "scratch" cat by my son. He's just getting started doing some weekend logging for some small private land ...

Well, here's a few photos of the blade and the pin points I'm looking at rebuilding. http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u459/mreggear/IMG_0082_zpsa72d4b13.jpg http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u459/mreggear/IMG_0084_zps751ab645.jpg http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u459/mreggear/IMG_0085_zpsbf1...

Dave, the wear is from the brake band being applied to the drum for the last 46 years. There are no abnormal wear issues, ie metal to metal problems. I completely understand the space shuttle reference. :) .016" didn't trouble me much as I have a lathe that can swing the drum and true the face up. I...

Allowable wear limit for 350 steering brake drum
I pulled the left steering clutch on my 350 yesterday due to a pinion seal leak. After getting the final and clutch cleaned up I noticed that I have a groove in the steering brake drum that is .016" in depth (measured with a straight edge and feeler gauge). I have searched my manuals but can't seem ...

I haven't changed mine yet as I've been busy and my left steering clutch is taking precedence. If I remember right the filter location is about center on the machine very close to the belly pan The filter cover is rectangular about 3" square held in place by 4 bolts and is facing towards the right t...

Yes, Kilohertz that is what my blade looks like. I like the pipe trick but I think that the pin sockets are egged out beyond pipe thickness. Center pin and corner/angle arm pins need to be re-bushed. After the Clutch repairs are complete , teardown this weekend, I'll look at working over my blade. G...

Rebuilding a old manual 6 way (6310) blade
I was taking stock of my 6310 blade while turning the cutting edges on the blade today. It looks like sometime in the not to distant future I will be needing to rebuild the pins and bosses on the ends and center pivots of the blade. Since the parts are made from that precious John Deere metal know a...
