Re: Manuals needed for a 420C?

Thanks Jim - That's probably where I got the idea, now that you mention it. It's been awhile since I've looked through the manuals.

Manuals needed for a 420C?

I currently have an operator's manual for the 420 crawler, a service manual for the 420 tractor (SM2019), a parts manual for the 62 blade and a parts manual for the 420 tractor. I also have Duane Larson's service bulletins on CD. What other manuals would have information that would be useful or need...

I've noticed that there is a slight amount of magnetism in the area of the back bearing on a working alternator - barely noticeable, but enough to swing a screwdriver if held lightly. As Stan says - a meter is the best proof, but I'm apt to have a screwdriver in my pocket, not so apt to have a meter.

I made a tool to fit the crank socket on my 420, and I leave a big ratchet on it so I can give it a turn when I walk by.

I didn't see any mention of switching to negative ground, but I might have missed it.

The O.P. said, "I don’t think it was wire correctly and may have fried the alternator."

Positive ground is tough on most alternators. I'll bet he has it at negative ground, but just saying in case he doesn't.

Drawbar hitch. I'll have to look closer at the disk - it's nothing like we used in road construction - much lighter. The owner pulled it with a Ford 5000 farm tractor, and at one time, with a 630 JD. If I remember right - the 630 struggled a little with it. I'd rather have too small than too big, of...

Offset disk on a 420 C?

Anybody have any experience pulling an offset (Rome) disk with a 420C? I'm wondering how big of a disk I can expect to pull with it. Gonna use it for hillside pasture renovation. It's a future purchase, and I don't want to buy something bigger than I can pull easily. I've got my eye on a 6 foot disk...

A photo posting test.

Bung wrench made from a cracked socket and a 1 7/8" long piece of 1/4" thick scrap.

I used a common pair of pliers on mine. Stick the ends of the handles in position and a large screwdriver thru the jaws for twist leverage. Couple of blood blisters later, and it's loose. It's a ten minute job to make a decent wrench for barrel bungs, but I've never taken the ten minutes to do it. M...

Lavoy, is that rough price including labor? Not wanting to offend you with stupid questions, but just don't know. My 420 appears to have pretty good UC, but the track is snaky. Pins and bushings have been turned already.

Pat - specifically, where is the motion? Is it rotational, as in the spline being worn? Or is it side to side (left/right) as in the bearings not adjusted properly? I'm also watching your post - I have a 420 with 3 degrees of rotational slop in the splines. Several mechanics tell me to put it back t...

Got 'em both off! Left one was about an hour of tapping. Right one was a bugger - finally got it off after about 5 hours of tapping, twisting and threading - used Lavoy's trick of threading a couple of the flange holes. Hope I didn't ruin the quills. Bearings and races were pitted - haven't found a ...

I've kept it wet for about a week with a mixture of ATF/Acetone. Tapped it as hard as I dare - don't want to destroy the housings. I think it's time to try a torch to soften the Permatex, or whatever the hardened sealer is. Don't like using a torch after running flammable liquids all over everything...
