Actually,i just tried something similar to this.I have a 40 wheel tractor with frozen shift forks.Looking for an easy way out,i tried the shift tower from an M.Two shift forks are identical, but the third is a totally different size. The part numbers involved are M46T and M1788T.

I run a 50:1 mix of non-ethanol 93 and two stroke oil.Red Armor two stroke oil to be exact.I don't notice any blue smoke from the exhaust. My theory is that two stroke oil provides a little top end lubrication,as well as helping the valves.I could be wrong, but surely it's better than nothing.

Wow.Amazing it wasn't stuck, considering the moist climate you have up there. As others have said,a complete change of ALL fluids is in order.I'm sure there is moisture in there somewhere. But what a find!I love stories like this.

I purchased a complete aftermarket fan with bearing for my M.It is a sealed bearing.Been on there for a year now with no issues.I believe the price was around $65.Perhaps that might be an option.

I thought i would post the outcome,in case it could help someone in the future.I was able to remove the flexible coupling.A bearing puller from Harbor Freight did the trick. There were no set screws or retainers of any kind.I was surprised.I thought i was missing something, and expected to break the p...

Please forgive my ignorance as to the name of the part.I was merely being lighthearted when I called it a THINGY. I have checked the hub numerous times and I do not see a set screw in the barrel.I scraped it with a wire brush and examined it with a LED light.Still,I do not see a set screw in the bar...

40C rear PTO thingy

Could someone educate me on the purpose of this rear pto gear/chain "thingy"?Since whatever it was attached to is missing, how can i remove it?It looks to be pressed on.I don't see ANY allen screws or bolts on the pto shaft sprocket. The parts manual doesn't show multiple PTO shafts for the 40C.At le...

Rusty and dusty 40-C

Hello Everyone.I recently purchased this 1954 John Deere 40-C.It was a barn find.I'm guessing it hadn't been ran in 15 years or more.It had little to no compression. However, after soaking for several weeks, sufficient compression returned. It runs quite well, with no smoke. The main clutch still has life...
