I too want to try the concrete drag idea. A local company made a mistake and poured 12" thick concrete they promptly had to remove. I haven't, but others have approached him about buying them at mistake price. Perhaps I will try my negotiating skills. The 450 is good for approximately 24000 lb drawb...

No good PTO, 3 point hitch, or easy acess hydraulics, I'd look to drawbar implements as used on large wheel tractors from the pre three point/shaft PTO days. What comes to mind is trailer plows, harrows, a trailer hog with engine. I believe the Amish use engine powered, and wheel driven machines dra...

Your retreat story reminds me of digging a monster boulder out of the road to the sugar house. I had a pile of propane cylinders (100 LBS) I thought were empty. Piling boulders, one fell on a cylinder, knocking the valve off. The noise was deafening! I hit the switch, and bailed off. An hour later I...

My wife did a scrapbook page; How a redneck deals with wasps. I discovered a basketball sized paper nest in the tree 10 feet from the deck. It had to go. I glued two lengths of 3/4" PVC electrical conduit into a J. Filling it with gas I blew compressed air in, repeating a few times I saturated the n...

The 410 backhoe, (wheels) has a priority valve. It needs high pressure to open. It diverts oil to prioritize steering. It severely limits loader function.

Might the engineers have added some variant of this to the crawler?

I don't know any doing it for a living loggers who don't have both skidders and dozers. Like other tools, they excel at different jobs. Be conscious that wear gets faster as an undercarriage wears. At the onset sprockets pull equally on all engaging bushings. After a while, the chain grows in length...

I don't know these tractors, whether they have closed center hydraulics, or not. I had a 410 backhoe, 15 minutes after starting it'd lose all hydraulic power. It turned out three of six spools in the backhoe control valve had bores too large for the spool internally. Oil that should build high press...

If you're seriously skidding logs a skidder wins hands down. If you want self sufficiency, able to build roads including skid roads, you need a crawler too. Big crew loggers have both. The logs mostly get moved with a skidder. The earth gets moved with a crawler. A skidder can build a road. It can't...

Don't leave the head off, squirrels will fill the oil pan full of nuts. There's a lot of room between piston, and cylinder. You sure got your moneys worth out of those sleeves. Reminds me of the Farmall Cub I got at age 9. It started very hard. I could slide a butter knife between piston and wall. W...

I've always believed that either oil is adequate early in its life. While mineral oil has shorter life, either variety contaminates at the same rate. I just gave away a Chevy pickup with 200,000 miles, engine function was fine. At 150000 an intake gasket failed, so we tore it down. inside the valve ...

We have a family of farmers that go back 6 generations in one place. They are intelligent people, and through careful management, have amassed serious wealth. I kid them that with so much antique equipment in use every day they could convert to an antique farm museum by adding the word to the sign b...

Friends used to sell me topsoil. It was load yourself. They had an old Ford A62 loader. On the dash was a warning sticker saying "DO NOT EXCEED HALF THROTTLE FOR THE FIRST 15 MINUTES" It didn't have enough power to fill the bucket with loose topsoil. Backing up required a vicious attack on the throt...

I don't know if I'll be forgiven, but there was a great article in Red Power Magazine a while back about Hy-Tran fluid. They talk of the earliest formulations being plain old oil. As years passed, the additives have become very sophisticated. Hy Tran is ideal for wet brake systems preventing the noi...

The machine shops involved in engine work buy from manufacturers of engine components. They know which are quality, and which aren't. I once bought a component group of parts from Central Tractor in Iowa.
