Thanks for the helpful info Mark, it looks pretty straight forward just didn't want to have it turn into a bigger project than I want to mess with in the woods. Any idea how thick the lining material on a new brake band is? If it's worn over 50-60% of service life I may try and order a new one if it...

450 C winch brake adjustment.

I have a 450 C with a winch brake that won't hold especially on heavier turns. Sometimes it will slip for 10-20 feet before grabbing and holding, but it seems to be getting worse and I'm hoping to get some advice on removing dry side winch cover. I have a manual for adjustment specs on brake spring,...

Thanks for the reply, you read correctly I was asking about overfull final drive case. I'm understanding the common sump the way you described it thanks for the confirmation. One thing I'm not sure about is draining the tranny to clean the screen in the front compartment. If im understanding my tm c...

Thanks for the reply. I only seem to be over full on one side and since i dont have a serial # i dont know if mine came as a common sump or has been converted. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, the way I understand the common sump on the later C models is that the two steering clutch housings ...

Thanks for the information Mark, not sure why I assumed the seal was in the steering clutch housing, but knowing it goes in from the back of the final case is a big help. My pessimistic brain was thinking it's not inconceivable that I might have to pull the pinion, then the clutch pack and do the se...

450c pinion seal??

Hi again, hoping to get some more good advice here. I recently bought a 450c dozer and finally welded some square stock in the final drive plugs to get them out and found the left side was over full and possibly slightly pressurized. I'm assuming this can only be the pinion seal between steering clu...

Thanks for the good information on coolant, and people. Just curious here, as I did a lot of thinking and hypothesizing while trying to educate myself. I noticed the silicates seem to have disappeared in the organic acid coolants. I'm assuming the OAT coolants control scale by being slightly on the ...

Hi metalmender, what part of the panhandle? Sorry to hear you have two machines to worry about, judging by your signature we might be a lot alike, more toys than we can keep up with. I also thought this stuff sounded great, extended life and no additives to monitor, sign me up. I should have known, ...

Sorry to cause a ruckus on your site Lavoy. I'm sure you have better things to do with your time than referee. It seems in my haste to keep my post short I did a poor job of communicating. I certainly didn't mean to say someone from this site suggested I dump whatever is handy in my machine. What I ...

LeonardL, sorry for busting your chops about spelling it was a crummy thing to do in response to what I felt might have been a questioning of my intelligence. I apologize for that. I should have taken the advice the way you meant it, someone with more experience than me trying hard to keep me from d...

WOW! At the risk of sounding offensive or causing a ruckus I guess I might just as well stand up for myself. I grew up on a dairy farm turning wrenches, keeping things going, and not a fan of futuristic technology. I'm one man trying to do the PM on more equipment than I should probably own and thou...

Can I change to elc oat coolant?

Hi again, thanks for all the great info I've found here so far. I recently purchased a 450 C and am going thru it before putting to work. I would like to drain flush and refill coolant with organic acid technology elc coolant and not have to monitor sca levels. I have read quite a bit on other forum...

Advice for aftermarket undercarriage parts in Northwest?

Howdy again, thanks to everyone who has offered advice on purchasing decision on a jd 450 dozer with winch. It's looking like I may end up with the c model that has less UC left so I'm looking for any input on best places to look for aftermarket undercarriage parts. I guess I'll start collecting the...
