Re: 450c 6-way fittings?

:D :D :D :D Report of findings: After struggling to get the threaded cap into the valve, I ended up using a sharpie to put higbee marks on the fitting like they do with firehose couplings. Then I was able to push real hard and only have to turn the cap a quarter turn to get it engaged. Then re-insta...

Re: 450c 6-way fittings?

Maybe I'm getting dumber by the day, but when I inserted the proper washer along with the four shims, I was unable to manually compress the spring enough to catch the threads on the cap. I tried until my hands were tired, so I know why the mechanic left it out! Is this normal? I think I can get it i...

Re: 450c 6-way fittings?

sorry my prior post was typo filled. the T10649 washer called for is 0.100 thick. The shims in my valve are all 0.010. The part I bought is in its original JD packaging with part number.

Re: 450c 6-way fittings?

The T10649 (I might have washer measures 0.10 inch, so that's quite the error in the pressure setting. I'm optimistic this will fix my problem when I get a break in the weather and my todo list. I bought two of them if anyone ever needs one..

Re: 450c 6-way fittings?

I only said I might set the bypass to a lower than spec pressure because I don't want to contribute to failure of old cylinder glands. Until my repair is complete, and I'm proven wrong, I'm going with the problem being the bypass was open all the time, and I was only able to develop enough pressure ...

Re: 450c 6-way fittings?

It will affect speed if all the flow is diverted by the bypass. At higher RPM, the flow increases enough to create a little more pressure and flow to the right place.

Re: 450c 6-way fittings?

Will reveal all next week. My gauge is 5000psi.

I may not go to the 2250 value since it IS an '81 with mostly original glands - hate to blow one out just to get faster operation. This machine is basically used for driveway maintenance and fire lines as required. Doesn't have to work very hard.

Re: 450c 6-way fittings?

maybe there's a special tool that would allow adding shims in place, but i wanted to get very close on the first try so i dont have to leak fluid everywhere and try to open the bypass on the machine.

Re: 450c 6-way fittings?

I have a custom hose with the SAE 3/8 boss male to liquid filled gauge already. I went ahead and ordered the washers from eBay - I couldn't talk the Pape guy to get the one place that had them in stock to measure them (and shipping was worse than the ebay deal). I'm optimistic that this will fix my ...

Re: 450c 6-way fittings?

So no idea how thick the washer is? And a single shim could move the pressure by 500psi or more? I'm guessing my three shims are all on the order of .010, although it's cold and dark outside right now, so I won't be measuring them for awhile. The missing washer is likely causing a huge issue.

Re: 450c 6-way fittings?

I finally dug into my 6-way valve to see if the bypass might be dumping all my pressure, and I found it had three shims but no washer. Anyone have any idea how thick the washer should be? When I unscrewed the cap, and I removed the spring and guide, the ball was in a side passage, not over the valve...

A closer look at the drawing shows you're correct. I confused #16 and #17.

Re: 450c 6-way fittings?

I'm thinking additional shims would lower the relief pressure, right? Seems like it's pretty much like a fuel injector, compressing a spring. There's an additional problem of access to the relief valve. If I take off the T-handle linkages, I can probably get to it. There is a access slot on the fron...

Re: 450c 6-way fittings?

Flow meters with valves and pressure gauges are a pretty pricey tool. At 69 yrs old, I really should be shrinking my toolbox, not expanding it, although my wife considers it good second husband bait.

Re: 450c 6-way fittings?

The valve inlet has a 90deg elbow with a 3/8" drain plug in it, so I just ordered a short hose and gauge from SurplusCenter. My parts manual lists a shim and the quantity is "AR" so probably "as required". Thanks.
